  1. The Swindon vs Luton question is a difficult one. Obviously, I have a bias against Swindon as I consider it a blight upon my home county of Wiltshire, whilst Luton is in Bedfordshire, an already undistinguished county. Both are towns which still live on past glories – Swindon used to have its railway works, which built most of the Great Western Railway’s steam locomotives, whilst Luton was once renowned for its hat making and the fact that Vauxhall Cars (the UK end of GM) once made their cars there – but which these days have slipped into nondescript mediocrity. However, although Luton has film director John Badham and author Arthur Hailey amongst its alumni, it can’t compete with Swindon’s celebrity roster which includes Diana Dors, Billie Piper, Gilbert O’Sullivan (remember him?) and topless model Melinda Messenger. Plus Swindon has its traffic roundabouts. The final mark of Luton’s mediocrity is the fact that it can be accessed from the M25 orbital motorway, itself some kind of highway to Hell.

Obviously, I’m now going to be receiving hate mail from the residents of Luton for ever more…
