Superman Fan Podcast Episode #146: It Was 50 Years Ago Today!*

As I celebrate my 50th birthday this week, on this episode I feature the Superman stories that were published the month I was born: September, 1960! Thanks to MIKE’S AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS at http://dcindexes.com for being an invaluable resource for this episode, as always!

DC published 27 titles during the month of September 1960, five of them Superman titles. They carried the cover date of November or November / December 1960, and a few carried the cover date of December 1960. All of the Superman titles that were published this month carried the November 1960 cover date.

- WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 113: published on September 6, 1960 and edited by Jack Schiff. The cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. It featured the Superman / Batman story, BAT-MITE MEETS MR. MXYZPTLK, written by Jerry Coleman, pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Sheldon Moldoff. This story was reprinted in BATMAN FROM THE THIRTIES TO THE SEVENTIES, WORLD’S FINEST COMICS ARCHIVES vol. III and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD’S FINEST vol. II. (I may have mistakenly said vol. III. That’s what I had written in my notes.)

The remaining Superman related titles were edited by Mort Weisinger.

- SUPERMAN 141: published on September 15, 1960. The cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. SUPERMAN’S RETURN TO KRYPTON was written by Jerry Siegel, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. It was reprinted in SUPERMAN IN THE SIXTIES, SUPERMAN: THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. II.

- SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 21 was published on September 22, 1960. The cover featured the second story in the issue, and was pencilled by Curt Swan and Kurt Schaffenberger (who inked Lois Lane and maybe Lana Lang). the rest of the cover was inked by Stan Kaye. THE LOIS LANE DOLL was written by Edmond Hamiltonand drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. It was reprinted in SUPERMAN: THE BOTTLE CITY OF KANDOR. THE BATTLE BETWEEN SUPER LOIS AND SUPER LANA was drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. The writer credit was unknown. It was only reprinted in 80 PAGE GIANT #3, with the cover date of September 1964.

I was disappointed to learn that no Superman titles were published on my birthday of September 27, 1960. The final two Superman related titles were published on September 29, 1960.

- ACTION COMICS 270: The cover was drawn by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. THE OLD MAN OF METROPOLIS was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by John Forte. It was reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. I. SUPERGIRL’S BUSIEST DAY was written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Jim Mooney. This story was reprinted in SUPERGIRL ARCHIVES vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. I.

- ADVENTURE COMICS 278: The cover was drawn by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. SUPERGIRL IN SMALLVILLE was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Al Plastino. It was reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. I.

Citizen Reporter  ctrp352 Landing as a Journalist in Kabul, 1996*

In Sept. 1996 the Taliban had just taken over Kabul and Jeremy Wagstaff was working as a journalist for Reuters in Hong Kong when the unexpected happened. He was told they needed him in Kabul, without much preperation or explanation he eventually found his way there and found his way to the front lines of the war in Afghanistan.

In this podcast, recorded one calm sunny afternoon in Kabul, Jeremy recalls what the city was like in those days, what you could and couldn’t do, and what dealing with the Taliban was like for a foreign journalist.

The Bikecast Episode #40: Giving Up on Politics*

The theatrics and drama of politics, along with the ever appealing us vs. them dynamic involved, freezes people for years and decades in the mistaken belief that the state can effect a reversal of social ills. Endless energy and resources are expended in the pursuit of political solutions and are thereby diverted from alternative efforts. This starving of effective, decentralized, and sustainable non-governmental approaches to social problems insulates and protects the existing power structures from the threat of any substantive change.

I had recorded an entire episode and part of a second episode last week. But alas, my iPod somehow became corrupted, and I had to talk about here what I talked about then. Sad, because I had some really great stuff! Talked about my involvement in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, held last week at Montclair State University, on a team led by Cindi Merklee, plus the screening of a short film I produced, “The Collector’s Item,” and Q&A with director Bill Clemis. Remembering “The Rampler” with the first, middle, and last 5 minute segments of the show… The first 5 minutes of “The Rampler #1″ from August 14, 2008. The middle 5 minutes of The Rampler recordings from March 13, 2009 (from “The Rampler #233″). And the last 5 minutes of “The Rampler on WFMU – Episode 16 – Night in Motion” from October 10, 2009.

In 2008, after 5 years of doing The Overnightscape, I was looking for a new method of doing the show that would take less time and effort. This experiment in field recording became “The Rampler”, and it was such a different experience, I took it in a whole new direction. It very quickly grew in popularity, largely due to my involvement in the “Andy Kaufman Lives” phenomenon. This led to an opportunity to bring the show to a real radio station – WFMU. But as 2009 wore on, the show’s popularity (at least as I perceived it) diminished, and the pressures of being on the “real” radio took away some of the spirit of spontaneity that the show had in its early months. And then… WFMU canceled the show. A little over a year after it had begun, The Rampler was finished.

I chose to continue my Internet radio recordings here on “The Overnightscape Underground” (which has been going great), and drop “The Rampler” name. While it is a good name, and I had a blast doing it, the name “The Rampler” is associated with energy and vibes that I would rather put behind me.

But what a wild ride it was!! This 15-minute audio piece is a brief encapsulation of the whole experience… but it’s all available for you to listen to…

Recorded on Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, 2006. On this Audio Field Trip, my wife Denice and I travel from northern New Jersey to a wedding in western Massachusetts. Phil and Sarah, listeners to The Overnightscape, are getting married at a Quaker retreat called “Woolman Hill”. On this recording, you’ll hear about the long drive up, the creepy motel, arrival at the wedding, the wedding ceremony, walking through a cornfield the next day, visits to the Yankee Candle Flagship Store and the Hampshire Mall, and much more.

I recorded this Audio Field Trip on my Edirol R-1 digital recorder. Unfortunately, the Compact Flash card had gone faulty but I didn’t know about it. The total recording consists of 75 segments, totalling almost 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, 11 of the files were corrupt – so about 36 minutes of recordings were lost, all interspersed throughout. The lost segments include some commentary about the wedding, the night drive back to the motel, and an interview with Phil and Sarah.

This release consists of the raw unedited audio (minus the corrupt segments). It is a long, rambling piece of audio, and the “narrative” suffers a bit from the loss of some of the segments. But there is a lot of interesting and very varied stuff in this audio. Hopefully I’ll do an edited version at some point that will be an easier listen.

I went to check out the opening of the new Apple Store Fifth Avenue and I wound up recording over 2-and-a-half hours of audio! Instead of waiting weeks or months to edit it and play it on the show, I figured I’d release the raw audio right away for your listening pleasure… nothing edited (except a few phone numbers I had to bleep). Ben from CodedSignal.com pretty much became my co-host at one point. I met a bunch of other podcasters there – it was a lot of fun! (P.S. Gaurav got in at 9:50 PM.)

Recorded on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at a bar called “One and One” (at the corner of 1st Ave. and 1st St. in Manhattan). Starring Greg Narain (Beercasting.com / Sparkcasting.com), Steve Warren (InteractiveNYC.com), Frank Edward Nora (TheOvernightscape.com), and waitress “Myar”.

Here’s the story – Greg created the website “Beercasting.com”, with the general idea of getting a bunch of people together at a bar, and then recording and podcasting their conversation on several different topics. At some point, Greg changed the name of the website to “Sparkcasting.com” and added a potential market research aspect to the project. This caused some controversy, as seen on this blog post. Then Greg posted on the NYC Podcasting Meetup forum, also causing a bit of controversy.

In any case, I went to the Beercasting that night, and we didn’t start recording till real late. Only Greg, Steve, and myself were left. Greg wanted me to use my recorder, so I recorded the Beercast. We talked on a number of different topics, including the Sparkcasting marketing idea, podcasting, Adam Curry, stats, and male aggression. Toward the end, waitress “Myar” joined the recording. I eventually went to the bathroom and the Beercast ended.

The next day I sent the audio file to Greg, who said he would post it on Sparkcasting.com. But, as it happened, Sparkcasting was never updated. If fact, to this day, the site does not appear to have been updated at all since May of 2005. I think I emailed Greg a few times, but eventually I forgot about the whole thing.

Then, at the Podcasting Expo in Ontario, California, in September 2006, who should I meet at the bar at the Marriott but Greg! It was good to see him again, and he said he was working on some new stuff. I mentioned the recording to him and he said I could go ahead and post it.

I’m still not sure what happened with the whole Sparkcasting thing, but in any case, here is the complete, unedited “Forgotten Beercast” from that long ago day…
