The Overnightscape Underground » News

8-hour segments of audio, hosted from a “virtual studio,” each identified by a single-word title. The stream would be composed of a sequence of such segments.

The idea is for a station someone can tune into anytime where there is a host at the top meta-level talking about the shows being played.

I did the first segment today, “Pinecone”, which is playing on there now.

Just an experiment right now, we’ll see where it goes.

I just wanted to remind all the hosts here on The Overnightscape Underground that playing commercial music on your show is not allowed – not even a short clip of such music. The only music you should play is music you’ve made yourself, or music which has been released under a Creative Commons/public domain license.

Of course there is the Fair Use exception under the law – which is unfortunately very vague and poorly defined. I would prefer that host invoke fair use to play clips of commercial music sparingly – and only if it is really necessary. The best scenario would be if there was no commercial music at all heard on any show.

I hope you all understand, and I look forward to your feedback.

The Overnightscape Underground has been going through some “growing pains” lately – so I thought I would jot down some of the important ideas behind the channel. These are a set of standards/guidelines which I think will help clear up a lot of misunderstandings.

IMPORTANT IDEAS

Chicken Over Veggies

Recently a new show was submitted for inclusion on The Overnightscape Underground – “Chicken Over Veggies” starring Komp, Chescu, and Mas Borracho. I listened to the first episode, and though it was a difficult decision, I chose not to add the show to the channel.

This experiment of ours, with multiple hosts doing shows here on Onsug, has been going since about September 2009. I never planned any of it – it just sort of happened, and I welcomed it. Now, there are a lot of shows on the channel, all very different, yet all very similar in some undefinable way.

So this is the first time I’ve had to reject a show. I knew it had to happen eventually, and it feels awful to be a kind of “censor”. But I feel strongly that The Overnightscape Underground has a tone, an identity, a feel – that while kind of impossible to pin down, is there. So though it’s uncomfortable for me, I do have to start to define the boundaries of tone and content.

I do think it’s a good show, but at the same time, for me the level of “offensive” content is so high that I am not comfortable with it being on the channel – it has a very different feel than the other shows here.

I upgraded the podcasting plugin here on Onsug.com from podPress to PowerPress. Everything should work normally, but let me know if you have any problems. Also, I am going to start getting stats using Blubrry (so there is a redirect URL for the MP3s). For so long I have had no real idea how many people were listening… now we shall see!!

I’ve been doing Internet talk radio shows for nearly seven years now. From “The Overnightscape” to “The Rampler” to the current project, “The Overnightscape Underground”, I have released over 1,800 audio files, totalling over 65 days in length.

You can download the entirety of this in a new archive I created called “Frank Nora Archive” (“FNA” for short). There are 47 ZIP files you can download, totalling 15.5 GB. There is also a checklist you can print out to keep track of things.

The audio format for FNA is 24kbps, mono MP3. While “lo-fi”, I think it sounds pretty good – kind of like listening to an old AM radio. I may release everything in the “hi-fi” format at some point, but for now this is fine.

FNA is based on my previous “OnsugBox” project – but expands upon it. Additionally, I will be adding each new month to FNA as I finish them.

If you use Firefox, you can install the free add-on “DownloadThemAll” to make it easier to download all 47 files. Or, of course, you can download them individually.

Enjoy the archive! There are many undiscovered audio treasures within!!

Best Read Me Files Ever

Mike Jittlov, creator and star of The Wizard of Speed and Time (and many other wonderful things), released a set of fonts and dingbats for the Apple Macintosh back in 1996. Included with the fonts were six amazing read me files which were composed using the fonts. I’ve always been amazed at these files… but unfortunately, you need Mac OS 9 to see them properly. So, I decided to take screen shots of all the files and stitch them together into one huge PNG file (628 x 23652 pixels) – which should be easily viewable in any current web browser.

I sent this to Mr. Jittlov himself, and he posted them (split back into six files), along with the original font download here.

Vacation and Box

As you may have heard on yesterday’s recording, “The Radio Vacation”, I am going to take a few weeks off from recording and releasing stuff. I’ll be back next month (November 2009).

In other news, I am very close to completing OnsugBox – a nearly 1,500-hour collection of just about all of my recorded work – up to and including yesterday’s recording! The main version will be around 75 GB and the Portable Version (with a lower audio bitrate) will fit on a 16 GB flash drive. My hope is that people can buy their own media and mail it to someone who already has the data, and is able to copy the data and then mail the media back to them. (Online distribution is also possible…) Stay tuned to onsug.com to see when it will be available.

The Rampler ends its run on WFMU

Though I was hoping to continue the show, The Rampler was not picked up for the Fall 2009 – Spring 2010 WFMU schedule.

There are two episodes remaining – I’ll do the show this Friday night / Saturday morning (October 3 – my birthday), and next week, October 10.

The reason for the cancellation, as I understand it, is twofold. First, it’s a very competetive schedule – a lot of very talented people want to get on the air on WFMU. Secondly, The Rampler really is on a very different “wavelength” from the other programming on the station, and so has been having a hard time “fitting in”.

I do think that given time, The Rampler may have been able to be a success at WFMU – but I understand it’s very hard to give a show like mine that kind of time, considering how many other shows are clamoring to get on.

So while I am disappointed, I do understand the decision and I think it may be for the best. Can only bash a square peg into a round hole for so long before it becomes tiresome for everyone involved.

I’ll remain on good terms with the station, and I may be back on the air in some capacity in the future.

With this, my sole remaining “radio” outlet will be The Overnightscape Underground (onsug.com) – which I do plan on continuing (and it’s been going great, and is better than the WFMU show anyway).

The Rampler on WFMU – Official Premiere Tonight!

The Rampler is now a regular weekly show on WFMU!

Tonight at 2:00 AM (the early morning of Saturday, June 27, 2009) is the official premiere of my show “The Rampler with Frank Edward Nora” on WFMU.

This comes after a lot of hard work, first doing a number of test shows, and then doing three fill-in shows on the air, over the past few months.

The show is a combination of NYC street recordings, just like the regular Rampler, and also me live in studio – somewhat reminiscent of The Overnightscape (I may even use a MadPlayer!)

The show is going to be on for the next 16 weeks on WFMU’s Summer Schedule, with the last show of the Summer being on October 10. After that, it is quite possible the show will continue on WFMU, but not guaranteed.

HOW TO LISTEN

You can listen over the radio airwaves in the NYC area on 91.1 FM. It is also broadcast on WMFU (90.1 FM) in Mount Hope, upstate New York. And of course, it will be streamed live at WFMU.org.

The interactive playlist will be active, where you can leave comments and chat with everyone. Just go to WFMU.org when the show is on for a link to the playlist.

I will also be experimenting with streaming live video on UStream at this link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rampler

The videos will be recorded for viewing anytime.

I also plan on taking phone calls, though probably a little later in the show.

The Rampler in Weird NJ Magazine

In the lastest issue of Weird NJ (#32), which just came out, there’s an article by Chris Gethard called “Tank You Veddy Much – On The Trail Of America’s Most InFamous, Possibly Dead Comedian — Andy Kaufman — In New Brunswick” about The Andy Kaufman Press Conference which I hosted back on November 9 of last year, in New Brunswick, NJ. Chris tells the story from his perspective, including his suspicions about me, and his high speed car chase afterwards. There are a lot of great pictures from the event (including 3 of me). The article is awesome and funny – definitely check it out if you can.

Unfortunately, the article is only available in the physical magazine – which I know has limited distribution outside (and even inside) New Jersey. But you can mail order it from the Weird NJ site.

This came as a very pleasant surprise, because I only learned of the existence of the article yesterday! I picked up a couple copies at the Barnes & Noble in Clifton, NJ, on Rt. 3, so I know they have it there.

New Time Radio

You may notice the “genre” tag in The Overnightscape Underground files is not “Podcast” – it’s “New Time Radio”. This project represents a lot of new ideas about Internet radio, and it is certainly distinctly different from podcasting in a number of ways.

The Overnightscape Underground is a “virtual broadcast” – a lot of audio you can download all at once, not via RSS but in one big ZIP file. Load it onto your computer or MP3, and explore the broadcast… it’s easy because the content is broken up into multiple tracks.

I’ll be elaborating more on these ideas, but I just wanted to let everyone know this is a new and different thing.

24-Hour MP3 File

Go to the Downloads page to get the updated 24-hour, lo-fi mono MP3 file. In the lyrics tag you will find brief descriptions of all the tracks.

This file supercedes the preview version of the 24-hour file, and is the same except for a few tracks where the audio was enhanced, but not changed.

All of Day 1 in a Zip File

Here is a zip file containing all 75 tracks in Day 1, plus a text file with all the descriptions:

This file is kind of big – 1.26 GB

Once you download it, just unzip it and use it like any other album in MP3. Just this one has 75 tracks and is 24 hours long.

Let me know if this works for you – it’s the first time I’ve released a file so large.

Wow… it’s been a long road getting here, but Day 1 is finally released!

(I had to “back date” all the track posts so they come up in the right order on the feed.)

Welcome to The Overnightscape Underground!

I have just started to set up this website. I am hoping to start with the official release of The Overnightscape Underground soon. For now, you can check out a full 24-hour preview of The Overnightscape Underground.

WordPress is good for this project in that each audio track can have its own page on the Internet with comments. Plus, you can listen to each track in a Flash player very easily. The problem is, blogs and podcast feeds generally present content in “reverse” order… the most recent stuff at the top and going back in time as you go down. Since The Overnightscape Underground is a sequential set of tracks, this “reverse” thing won’t work. So I have to figure out what to do… perhaps back-date all the posts so they wind up in the the proper order? I don’t know.

Things will be experimental for awhile…
