The onsug network is a very positive creation and I appreciate the ability it gives me to share with the other members.
My main advice would be that I think you need to have a dedicated channel for yourself, perhaps called The Frank Nora Show, or the Overnightscape.
I would then place all of the other programs you host on the ONSUG, including audio you create that doesn't fit your opinion of what should be on your main channel.
I think that might work, but I also think having it all be in one feed is still fine.
I put this about ONSUG marketing on the chat
thinking about onsug marketing 07:03:16 ‹Bob› Marketing is about on message repeated as many times as it can be tolerated 07:03:44 ‹Bob› The more brief the better 07:05:06 ‹Bob› I think about the "obey" andre the giant art project by Shepard farie and how that was repeated, mysterious and interesting 07:05:48 ‹Bob› We might try coming up with a simple graphic, the website and a simple call to action 07:06:27 ‹Bob› We get everyone who makes shows to put these up in the large cities we live in and see what happens 07:08:45 ‹Bob› I also think the Andre the giant art worked because it was a face, people gravitate towards faces. 07:09:00 ‹Bob› Anyhow this is an idea
Here is a little conversation Chad and I had this afternoon, with links to some graphic ideas:
12:38:22 ‹chad› btw, like your idea about the simple graphic to promote the show 12:38:32 ‹bob› Thanks 12:38:42 ‹bob› I think that might get some traction 12:39:27 ‹bob› especially since it would be over a pretty wide geographic area 12:39:28 ‹chad› onsug.com is probably a given 12:39:58 ‹chad› but the graphic, what could that be. 12:40:34 ‹chad› a radio? a microphone, some simple image to represent overnight ramblings 12:40:39 ‹bob› yes, put the website on the bottom 12:40:48 ‹bob› either would be good 12:40:57 ‹bob› I really like icons 12:41:06 ‹bob› so something like that, simple but bold 12:41:29 ‹chad› yeah, from what you had mentioned, for some reason I had the pictorialgrams 12:41:44 ‹chad› in my head, the little blue people that represent men and womens bathrooms 12:41:50 ‹chad› and various olympic events 12:41:55 ‹bob› that would work as well 12:42:45 ‹chad› I've been writing to somewhat famous people, trying to turn them on to what Frank is up to 12:43:03 ‹bob› that is interesting, any responses? 12:43:12 ‹chad› I think the story element for someone that might choose to cover onsug, probably starts with Frank 12:43:30 ‹chad› responses, Marc Maron wrote me back, said he would check into it. 12:43:44 ‹chad› Jesse Thorn has not written back, likewise Howard Stern 12:44:02 ‹chad› I think Boing Boing would be a good place to have several people make an effort 12:44:03 ‹bob› here is a good microphone pictogram http://www.clker.com/clipart-29058.html 12:44:20 ‹bob› Boing Boing, might really like it 12:44:46 ‹bob› here is another good one http://www.clker.com/clipart-15373.html 12:44:48 ‹chad› like the mic, that has a great somewhat creepy "brutalism" 1970's feel to it. 12:45:01 ‹chad› If i saw the word onsug.com under that, I would feel the need to check it out. 12:45:37 ‹chad› yeah on Boing Boing, I think the story we should all try to sell in the beginning is about this interesting guy named Frank 12:45:49 ‹chad› who has been documenting reality of daily life for almost 8 years 12:46:10 ‹chad› and in the process creating a very unique document that will surely be very interesting to those in the future 12:46:12 ‹bob› I think if we just come up with a simple graphic and then get everyone to populate it in all the areas we live, it would get some attention 12:46:15 ‹chad› it's a one of a kind thing. 12:46:25 ‹chad› Totally agreed with what you are saying 12:46:36 ‹chad› I think its two seperate goals 12:46:56 ‹bob› Yes, but neither is overly difficult 12:47:01 ‹chad› One, frank should be more popular and Second, the onsug network should be too. 12:47:24 ‹bob› then you just get everyone on board on the network 12:50:06 ‹chad› I can imagine sending stickers to everyone and asking them to place them 12:50:37 ‹chad› especially around Universities, colleges, high schools 12:50:49 ‹chad› all night wicker stores 12:51:12 ‹bob› yes 12:51:17 ‹bob› that is the idea 12:52:46 ‹bob› Here you go, I did this real quick http://StaticRadio.com/picts/m...sug.png 12:52:54 ‹bob› I am sure others could do better 12:52:59 ‹bob› but this is the idea 12:53:32 ‹chad› yep, totally with you, something small, simple 12:54:24 ‹chad› I remember being captivated by those Obey stickers back in the early 90's 12:55:07 ‹chad› wasn't there several campaigns around that, like andre has a posey 12:55:11 ‹chad› and the posse 12:55:15 ‹chad› and the obey stickers... 12:56:44 ‹bob› Here is another version http://StaticRadio.com/picts/m...sug.png 12:57:12 ‹bob› I like the boldness of black, white and red, but we don't have to go with it 12:57:53 ‹chad› yeah, that's pretty cool 12:58:02 ‹chad› the mic has a cylon vibe 12:58:32 ‹chad› makes me think of a 70's 80's small metal button pin thing they would sell on the counter of record stores 12:58:34 ‹bob› I think the 2nd one is better, the first one, might be misinterpreted, but the second one is a microphone 12:58:54 ‹bob› It also looks futuristic and retro at the same time 12:59:00 ‹bob› kind of like the cyclon 12:59:58 ‹bob› plus at a distance I think the red will really grab attention 12:59:58 ‹chad› are you thinking like a 3 inch sticker? 13:00:06 ‹bob› then close up you see the URL 13:00:28 ‹bob› sure, whatever folks can do, just give them the graphic and and they can use whatever sticker or paper they can do 13:00:39 ‹bob› plus its a png so it can go big if you have the means 13:00:53 ‹chad› nice. like it.
Interesting ideas. I have been thinking about focusing more on The Frank Nora Show as a separate thing (as it already is: http://show.franknora.com/ ) ... but taking it off Onsug would be a big step. I have also toyed with the idea of the return of "The Rampler". As well, I have been thinking of an iconic image to help promote whatever we want to promote.
But I think that we do need to have some kind of context/hook before thinking about stickers and flyers and stuff...
I think the whole open source thing is a very interesting aspect - how it's all freely available and can be redistributed as well. And also the size of the archive - over 3 months of audio.
I think about this stuff every day, and it is maddening how labyrinthine it all is. Or maybe I'm making it harder than it has to be?
I think having everything in one big stream is still a good idea. Even if you start splitting things into separate channels. There should always be an option to easily subscribe to everything.
Trick is to contextualize it as an "unfiltered" stream and give people easy options for "filtering" out just the shows they want if it all gets to be too much.
There are already category RSS feeds, maybe link to those from each post or something. Another idea, but one that require a lot more setup would be to let people create a custom feed themselves (check off shows from a list for example and then get a single RSS feed with just those shows in it). Some "help" pages explaining how to subscribe to a raw RSS feed in iTunes and other major "podcatchers" for the non-tech savvy folks that only know how to subscribe to stuff listed in the iTunes store might help too.
Frank, since all of the content is freely available and can be redistributed, could anyone just create a new webpage, with a different interface, and simply link to the shows and the content? Or, if they started such a webpage, would you want them to also "host" the audio files, too? (I hope my question makes sense...) For instance, if I wanted to create a simple web page, listing all of the titles of the shows, w/ links to, say, the latest 5 files available for download, would that be acceptable? (Obviously, credit would be given to original creators, onsug, you, etc...)
I think in general that permission to hotlink to files is not implied in the Creative Commons license. You could, as you say, make copies and host them yourself. But to hotlink, it is probably best to ask permission.
