eddy – the problem with trying ‘live collaboration’, online is that (unless theyve made some interface that corrects for time) it is almost impossible to play with another person in synch. we should absolutely be sending tracks around to each other and adding our own bits to them, via overdubbing. i can play rhythm guitar, bass (sorta), and assorted keys/electronics. Some say that I can sing, as well. we should all get our google IDs all set for google+ ‘hang out’ action for ‘clusterflux’ type shows, tho….

Your comedy routine with your friend laughing and talking back to it was amazing. Something really special going on there. It was like three realities. US, listening, the comedians reality, and then the layer of the observer, PEter, somewhat detached, somewhat encouraging. REally great dynamic.

Coz I do always listen then i do always make mental note of NEXT subject then I do always say i will do an audio sequence for the NEXT ONSC then i forget what the mental note was for the NEXT show and then its busy middle week end week weekend then I do say I will fish it out again by playing the show again and finding where you say what NEXT topic is (usually near end) but then sometimes i dont and then i dont do the NEXT one and then I listen and then i do say to myself “self!? why u didnt do NEXT show coz it all sounds good and u coulda done this this and THIS! and it woulda been cool”" and then i say “I wish it was just in description so it would make it so much easier on self”" On your discretionary self of next show it will be upon thee and i shall comment on this one as soon as i find out what NEXT is and so then i can look at comment for NEXT one for self to do, and then I will do the do, and doodley doodle doo di doo doo.

A very good point PQ, deaf folks get along very well. Since I have never been stopped and drive past at least 1 police officer a day with an earphone in. My thought is that the legislators are the ones with the problems of logical thinking.

I’m not a famous musician and I want my music to get out into the world, so Creative Commons is very attractive to me. I’m not out to make a buck off of my creations. If it eventually leads to that, great…but for right now, I’m very realistic about my level of fame (i.e. none). I’m not deluded into thinking I’m going to make millions, or even thousands, of dollars from my songs.

It’s similar to middle class people during Presidential elections here in the U.S…. many middle class people vote for candidates who want to give tax breaks to very rich people, because those middle class people are deluded into thinking that one day, they too will be one of those rich people. They vote against their own best interests because of these delusions. Same thing with unknown musicians who are anti-Creative Commons.

All municipalities have a Business Registry for taxes, etc. In my hometown, I actually managed to dig around, some, long ago. There is a sort of record for every business, (theoretically) even in Manhattan… some day, some ambitious OCD-type should be able to generate a map that will be able to show the history of the businesses that existed in every building.

now that I’m done ranting, I would like to say that I enjoyed this episode very much. I too, try and be the hero on these sort of quests and sometimes feel amazed at how complicated some errands can become. Sometimes I feel that I have been drafted into a Laurel and Hardy like reality simulation, where my attempts to accomplish simple things becomes a comedy for some other race of beings living on the god level.

the whole concept is absurd, this is the sort of thing that sounds good to political folks and sounds good to reactionary attempts to solve the drug problem by making everyone a part of the criminal class. Now that this chemical is harder to get over the counter, drug productions just switches to other sources, or perhaps I’m wrong and this move has cured America of its meth problem. At most its a big whatever to the meth makers and a everyday pain for the 99% of the normal people who just have a stuffed nose.

One of the sad outcomes of this is that all of the now freely available over the counter stuff uses 2nd rate but shelf legal ingredients that have more negative health consequences. Try and avoid the stuff that is on the shelf, many of those replacement versions are very dangerous for stroke risk.

Stick to psuedo and remember to punish knee jerk political people who make your life miserable all for a meaningless strong drug stance soundbite.

Pseudoephedrine is regulated because people use it to make meth. That’s what I was told. Then I looked it up on Wikipedia.

Wiki says: “There have been reports of off-label uses of pseudoephedrine for its stimulant properties. Long-distance truck drivers and sports athletes, for example, have reportedly used pseudoephedrine as a stimulant to increase their state of alertness/awareness. The similarity in chemical structure to the amphetamines has made pseudoephedrine a sought-after chemical precursor in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine and methcathinone. As a result of the increasing regulatory restrictions on the sale and distribution of pseudoephedrine, many pharmaceutical firms have reformulated, or are in the process of reformulating medications to use alternative, but less effective, decongestants, such as phenylephrine. Many retailers, such as Target, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Boots and Winn-Dixie, have created corporate policies restricting the sale of pseudoephedrine-containing products. Their policies restrict sales by limiting purchase quantities and requiring a minimum age with proper identification. These requirements are similar to and sometimes more stringent than existing law. Internationally, pseudoephedrine is listed as a Table I precursor under the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.”

I have a vague awareness of the Shaggs. Back around ten years ago someone who kept an online journal I used to read put up a brief sound clip of a song called It’s Halloween by the Shaggs. I never forgave her for that.

But I have had that same phenomenon of something from the past coming up in conversation and everyone else knew about it but me, and it’s something I probably should have encountered at some point. My wife mentioned a medical issue I apparently had a few years ago, and I have no memory of it at all… now that’s scary! Perhaps I’ve slipped into this alternate timeline and in my old timeline that medical issue didn’t happen.

Well, Eddie, I really liked it. I think it works just as well as the episodes with the tighter edits, just in a more relaxed way. Both methods have value. I think the important thing is that you do the shows in the way that feels right to you. That may well mean something a little different each time. It was a good listen.

I hope that whatever treatments your uncle gets will be successful. I hope that he will be okay.

Acting has always been an interest of mine, but I don’t think it’s ever been a passion for me as such. Certainly not in the way that writing used to be, or that recording audio shows is now. I changed my major from theatre to English when I transferred from a two-year college to a four-year, pretty much because I didn’t see myself making money as an actor. Since then I’ve done community theatre on occasion, but the last time I did that was in 2006. I may do more at some point–it can be fascinating playing a character onstage–but right now I just feel like being myself.

Ah, the Night Caller! A perennial late night favourite of mine – I’m glad somebody else likes it. It’s hard to put your finger on, but it definitely has a certain something. Fwiw, it was filmed in England (as opposed to Scotland, Wales or any other part of the UK), at Shepperton Studios, just outside of London. I’m not sure of the actual locations used, but they were probably in the Staines area, (not that far from where I live). There’s a very amusing review of the film on the British Horror Films website, as I recall.

Keep up the good work pq, Bug Out has become essential listening for me!

When regular people win huge jackpots in the lottery, it’s the same as when young athletes get a pro sports contract and receive millions of dollars overnight. These people grew up in modest conditions and never knew how to handle finances. Then suddenly they’re handed a check for millions of dollars. Their brains aren’t used it and can’t handle it. They go crazy.

These lottery jackpot winners and young athletes always get themselves in trouble and waste their money on foolish excess because they grew up in one extreme and suddenly went to the other extreme. They didn’t grow up with money and learn how to handle it in a healthy way.

Loved that ending with the “timeline” bus…wow! I’ve had many such oddities happen to me (though for the life of me I cannot think of an example right now). I also like to bring up the point of “deja vu” in these theories as well. Could something that happened in an alternate timeline cause us to experience deja vu? Perhaps that’s the point of what we are getting at here. Some event occuring repeatedly that we always strive to get past it & after so many attempts we start to recognize or have that familiar feeling about a situation. Very interesting stuff!

I have this crazy multi-part Gunkcast (1st part is already out) which is a big parody of several big sci-fi series (won’t mention names here). I just thought, I totally forgot to bring the alternate timeline thing into it…I may need to do some script revisions!

Chad, on determinism and the existence of separate outside (observable) and inside (in the mind) worlds – this is just one interpretation of reality. My top theory is that there is indeed randomness – that the coin toss is random – and that the physical factors serve the random outcome.

Also, the idea of supernatural beings, gods, time travel, alternate worlds, alternate timelines, telepathy, magic… all this… to me could be ultimately understood in a “scientific” way. We ourselves could be very limited in terms of what we can observe – so our logical conclusions only cover the tiny slice of reality we can perceive.

I think it’s good to expand one’s perspective, taking into account the limitations of the human being, and being open to the possibility of a much larger world.

PQ, I think the Annunaki are as pop culture obsessed as we are, so I hope they enjoy our shows!

btw, the coin toss like any other chaotic event is actually deterministic. Although these event can become very complicated they remain deterministic. There is no random. Back to your example of the coin, given the weight of the coin, the temperature, the air currents, gravity, the forces you applied to the coin, it could have only happened one way.

Have you ever read Parallelities by Alan Dean Foster? Great book. The main character winds up in several parallel universes and meets himself in a couple of them. It’s both fascinating and very funny. I think you’d really like it.

The other book that popped into my head while listening to this episode was Replay by Ken Grimwood, but I think you’ve read that and discussed it on the show before. That’s one of my favorite novels.

One more thing: at 54:48 of this episode I could swear I can hear a woman in the background saying “Overnightscape.” It’s right after you mention Jean Shepherd doing his show from the building you were passing. She may have been saying something else, but to me it sounded a lot like Overnightscape.

That was so AWESOME Jacob!!!! I loved all your movie reviews. You made me want to re-watch Little Shop of Horrors… and that’s exactly what I’m going to do! If you also like to read, since you liked ET the movie, I recommend reading the original book ET, I believe it was published in 1982. I still have my copy. I read that book in 7th grade when I was 13. I loved the book. Unfortunately, when I finally saw the movie, I didn’t like it. The book contained so much more back story in the beginning to explain all about where ET came from and why he was on earth. Oh yea, and in the book… ET liked M&Ms! Not Reese’s candies as seen in the movie. Great show! Looking forward to the next one

That’s one of my favorite Vic and Sade episodes. There’s something really funny about the way Rush keeps saying, “How’d he get in on this?!?”

It was the same with me when I first started listening to Vic and Sade: it took a few episodes to get the groove and then I suddenly realized just how brilliant the show was. I think it was Smelly Clark’s Uncle Strap taking his lady friend to Peoria for purposes of enjoying a fish dinner that made it click.

You know, it’s weird. Somehow, I needed to get this idea out, and Nightstation was kind of a tool for me to help get the idea out… At this point, I think the new idea, as it develops, probably won’t be called Nightstation. So I am open to reviving Nightstation as it was in phase one, with some slight modifications (such as listing the host’s name in the show title). We shall see….

hate to disagree, but, ‘jumping into the middle of the unknown’ is what NIGHT RADIO IS ALL ABOUT. yes. some people tuning into the stream were immidiately ‘put off’ but i would bet they wouldnt be listeners, regardless. more and more, i think we aborted the old nightstation way too early.

What is the feedback when played to your peers?. My recordings of all sorts in N. Y. / Miami / Tampa were lost due to matters left closed for now. I just think “the new iPad” felt wrong for the Apple brand. I understand the idea of stopping the numbering scheme, but it was an inelegant solution.

so glad to here you’re new show. but i do have to disagree with your Apple assessment. Changing the naming strategy to simply the ipad is actual the bold move, what you are suggesting would be the standard option and therefore the one most likely to be approved by a committee.

I’m really enjoying the musical selections lately: Modulation 5 from last show and both the Hot Tuna cover and the 3 Man Army segment from this one. Also, I completely agree with you about the Rush fiasco.

And don’t worry, PQ, I haven’t abandoned you. This week I’ve been taking it easy a little, doing a lot of reading and also making digital versions of some old field recordings that I’m planning to put into the next Shambleshow. But I’m planning to make some more BUG OUT contributions soon.

yeah, the first time i saw one of those, one of my brothers had it connected to his guitar it really blew me away, the idea of using rotating speaker elements was so different than anything i had seen before. Great visual to stare at one of those playing with the covers off and hear the sound at the same time. Like it is some artifact similar to the obelisk, it has come to speak to us.

He was also a semiregular on The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show (which is one of the best OTR programs I’ve found). I can’t remember his character’s name on there, but he played a kid who had a crush on Alice. Yeah, he was very funny.

Bob, glad to hear St. Louie has a Mardi Gras. It’s such a large part of life in Mobile Al. There are nearly 50 different societies and each has parties and events through the year with Mardi Gras being the highlight, but all of the other holidays have dinners, balls and other celebrations for the various groups including the formal debutante season.

Mobile’s peaks at about 400K visitors on the parade route, with each season having 22-30 parades organized. Mobile’s is the nations oldest Mardi Gras and was formed when Mobile was the French Capitol of Louisiana. You never here about Mobile’s events on a national level, and most people in Mobile seem very content with that.

Growing up in Mobile meant you had the week off from school every year for the culmination of the Mardi Gras Season.

If you would like to see a neat look into Mobile Mardi Gras, my friend Margaret did a documentary about it called, “the order of myths” see if it is available on Netflix or anywhere else.

I’ve had people tell me they can’t understand the British accent. One person said that’s why she didn’t get into the Harry Potter films. Seriously! It’s the same language; I don’t see what’s all that difficult about it. Kids don’t seem to have a problem following what Hermione and Ron are saying.

I actually kind of liked the Men Behaving Badly U.S. version when it came out. The U.K. version is far superior, I’ll admit.

But yeah, that American version of Coupling was awful.

Thanks, Carrie! Yup, just finished listening to this and it’s a great episode. I really enjoyed going on your journey with you. I think doing a long episode like this every so often (even though I know you did this one kind of out of necessity from being without Internet for so long) can be very rewarding; you can get more in-depth with things than you would if you only had a half hour or even an hour. Cool things happen in recording in bits and pieces over the course of several days that you never would have expected. And the great thing about Internet radio is that you’re not confined to a specific length of show. It can be whatever you want.

Your current audio levels sound great. I’ll be looking forward to hearing episode 10 and future Carrie Michel Shows.

Another great episode. I’m finding I appreciate this show the most when I can just sit and listen to an episode all in one go rather than in bits and pieces. It’s just a shame that Jean Shepherd episode doesn’t exist in its entirety; the last few minutes of what we have of that one are just exceptional.

I hope to have more material ready for you by the time you get ready to do the next show. I think you’re going to be receiving some excerpts from the 1923 Bloomington High School yearbook (see Shambleshow #16 for further details).
