Pq I think that’s a great idea to chip in for some ppc and seo. I talked to a company in new York that offers seo and social media management for 1800 dollars for 6 months contract. If we could come up with 150 bills each it wouldn’t be far off. I know that’s a lot of money for some of us already on a tight budget, but I think it’s a doable and not too much a daunting target, all we have to do is send It to franks Paypal and let him decide how best to spend it, or whoever he anoints project manager of the task.

Actually think you where a bit hard on the coffe maker people. Though the response you quoted sounded a bit poorly crafted (written a bit too fast by a non-native English speaker maybe?) I would interpret it to mean that the sticker should indeed be present on all new machines shipped from them and if it’s missing you need to discuss it with the store. Didn’t sound like a form letter anyway. I’ve seen a lot worse, like one support ticket I had with a company about a certain utility they provided not working properly under 64 bit Windows 7 and re-installing didn’t help, and they initially responded with a step-by-step guide on how to re-install it on a MAC…

Hi Frank, this is my last comment for this episode. I just finished listening to it. Good and Plenty’s Choo Choo Charlie commercials were still being shown throughout the 1970s and maybe even the very early 1980s. That’s probably why you remember them. I remember that jingle from when I was a few years old. There are some Choo Choo Charlie commercials on YouTube from the 1970s that feature the same art style as the ones from the 50s. I don’t think they ever switched styles during all those years.

Regarding solitaire at casinos, solitaire in Windows (all the way back from Windows 3.x and still going in Windows 7) has a setting called “Vegas scoring” (in addition to standard scoring), which deducts $52 from the player’s score every time he or she starts a new game and limits the player to flipping through the deck only three times. That leads me to believe solitaire was in fact a casino game at some point in time.

Hi Frank. I’m thinking those videos with the “noises heard around the world” are part of an elaborate marketing campaign for an upcoming movie, probably directed by J.J Abrams or that idiot M. Night Shyamalan. Remember when Sony started a blog gushing about the old PSP, but then someone found out the blog was actually run by Sony? Companies do strange marketing these days.

Trivia I forgot to use: When plotting the recording of the ‘Happy Happy Joy Joy’ song, for the classic ‘Stimpy’s Invention’ cartoon, Spumco made great attempts to contact Burl Ives to sing it.

Hey frank contact that guy from staten island and see if he sounds legit. I am not sure but I think I heard something similar here around that date I thought it was someone dragging heavy sheet metal along the concrete, my knee jerk reaction was conspiratorial and I just told myself I was being paranoid and it was probably road works or something. I know there is a lot of people saying they are fake but I dunno. You’d be a pretty good judge of character if u could contact that guy. I wish I recorded it now when I heard it here that day I’m kicking ,myself now.

Hey Bob……catching up on your podcast you were having a problem deciding what to do with your old car plates. (I think #113)

You should have turned them in to DMV, silly. Common sense. Some crook could get hold of them and use them in a crime

and they come back registered to you. In Nevada, we are supposed to turn them in so they are cancelled from our name. DUH!

Use better judgement next time. Recycle doesn’t always go to recycle.

I just want to clarify the Onsug policy on playing audio clips from the Internet. I never said that you need to get permission for every single audio clip you play. There are many circumstances where playing an audio clip could be reasonably considered fair use – in which case, you do not need to ask for permission, as far as I’m concerned.

Commercial music is a very different matter – it should only ever be played in narrow fair use way – such as playing a short clip in the context of a review. Short clips as intro music, bumper music, etc. are not fair use, in my opinion. There is more than enough CC licensed music out there these days to play.

Martin and Lewis were as big/bigger than the Beatles in the early 1950s. Martin, actually wasn’t much of a drinker, they say, until his son was killed in a tragic plane crash. The celebrity roasts are the domain of the Friar’s Club – Martin got the ‘rights’ to do some much tamer versions than what happened when the roasts were a private event (you can find bootleg recordings of early roasts and they are quite ‘blue’). Always great to hear ya!

Great to hear your good lady on the show. She doesn’t know what she’s missing by not listening to Onsug, but I guess we’ll have to respect her decision. (Mine doesn’t express much interest in hearing my audio work either. Fortunately she doesn’t mind me recording her; I get some great material from her just chattering!)

The first 15 minutes of this episode are absurdist silliness bliss. Hearing that put me in a better mood.

Dr Who is supposed to be silly. This serious stuff has no appeal to me and I have not watched any episodes since Sylvester McCoy retired the original franchise. Someday, if I can figure the right angle, I hope to see all the newer ones, but, let’s face it – I like the original Lost In Space better than any of it. so my opinion is tainted.
Glad the Tyson clip served its intent. Mind boggling….

Frank, I haven’t seen the new Doctor Who special yet, but I agree with you about the way the show is going lately. I don’t mind complicated stories per se, but they’ve been making them unnecessarily complicated this past year. That’s from another longtime fan like yourself who recently attended the Chicago TARDIS convention (and recorded a lot of audio there some of which will appear either on The Shambleshow or Nightstation at some point soon).

PQ, special points to you for that not only unbelievable but actively outrageous bit of Tyson audio near the end of this episode…

It’s funny how we look at christmas the same all over the world, I’m in Sweden where we celebrate christmas mainly the 24′th, and I got a few laughs after hearing you speak about this, since feeling that empty feeling and everything you talked about the day after the celebrations. I hadn’t ever heard Shep narrate the Red Ryder story either; thanks, Mike! I have heard a show that’s called Flick’s Tongue–it’s on one of the archive.org pages of Jean Shepherd shows–and I think it’s even funnier than the actual movie A Christmas Story. There’s also a great one about his first day of kindergarten when his teacher insisted his name must be Eugene and she got him all confused. What a fascinating storyteller he was.

Buy an old VHS camcorder and set it in your car window and aim it so it shows newspapers, flying thru the air and landing on the appropriate porch/yard. Use the time/date stamp. This should correct any issues. I have no clue how you can be held accountable, but perhaps this method will avoid further problems.

Great stuff and love the autotune…..
You may wanna look into using a program that does recording in a MUCH lower bitrate form, but I suspect that an iPad just isnt gonna like making 4+ hour long audio files….

Hey Carrie, thanks for the shout-out! I’m having a blast here on Onsug, as I can tell you are too. I love your show. You choose some excellent music and I really enjoy hearing your take on various topics. You have to key in data entry the entire eight hours? Yikes! I’m not so sure that’s good for you to not be able to get up and walk around once in a while. But on the other hand it is nice to be able to listen to the various Onsug shows while you’re working; if I couldn’t do that I wouldn’t have time to listen to much at all.

On a related note, you have a very calming voice that is a pleasure to listen to. I was really stressed this morning at work and listened to this episode, and I feel a little more relaxed now. So thank you!

Wayne, you’re not going to believe this but I also have audio footage of myself being pulled over by police. I was recording an audio journal entry while driving back in July in my wife’s car, and got pulled over because a headlight was out. Maybe I’ll include that audio in an episode of Anybody’s Guess. Anyway, I really like Sparetime Radio. You could reach your goal of 100 episodes by the end of 2011 if you release an episode a day between now and then. Just make them really short episodes, like ten minutes each on one brief topic or something.

Another great episode, sir. I have long been bothered by a similar situation in social gatherings, where it just seems kind of hollow and it’s hard to connect with anyone. You have put it into words better than I’ve been able to. Sometimes it’s from catching people on a different wavelength, and sometimes it’s just from seeking deeper meaning to things than others around you are seeking. A lot of people are content to stay in one place and to not grow and evolve. It could also be that you just don’t see the areas of growth and evolution in the social setting.

Another phenomenon could be coming into play. There’s an episode of How I Met Your Mother where they talk about something called “revertigo,” which is the tendency to revert to the person you were when you’re around someone from your past. That one really hit home for me. Maybe that’s what some of your friends do, unconsciously. I’ve experienced revertigo, which is why I will very likely not attend my high school reunion (it’ll be 20 years in 2012). Although I could probably get a good Anybody’s Guess episode out of it if I did go. Hmm…

Oh man, the memories that people have brought up in this episode… just from having listened this morning, I’ll probably have to give you all credit for prompting a couple of possible Anybody’s Guess topics in the near future. I do feel a slight pang when I think about the fact that the Saturday morning cartoon extravaganza is a thing of the past. Star Trek TNG was awesome, and I think I’ll take Carrie’s recommendation and seek out some Dead Like Me. Oh, and Jon Pertwee was the Third Doctor. If I remember correctly, they hired him based on his comedy background but he then decided to play the character in a more serious vein (with brilliant results). I’ve heard of Worzel Gummidge but have never tracked down any of it to see what it was like.

Hey Frank, cool audio of the Apple Store opening! I didn’t actually realize there was a chat room set up for Nightstation; I’ll have to check that out. Arsenio… now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time…

I love the Jack Benny Program: it’s my favorite old-time radio show. When he did the Allen’s Alley parody, he called his version Benny’s Boulevard and I think he had Dennis Day and Phil Harris imitate all the characters. I’ve listened to some Fred Allen, and the guy was undeniably brilliant, but some of his material is hard to follow because it’s more topical than Benny’s and you don’t always get the proper context to “get” the jokes. The fake feud between the two is top-notch material.

I bet the government would love for it to break out in Aug/Sept right before the elections. Might be the only way Obama could win a second term. They’ve been posturing for this war heavily all year long so it’s going to happen. 2012 is going to be a very tough year, even if no major disaster happens.

Thanks shambles, I have come to terms myself that I may never know and that is okay now because I have made public the wrong doings against me, therefore my hands are washed. Believe me when I say I have no intention of controlling anyone else’s actions. I am solely responsible for myself alone. It is those that are irresponsible for how their own actions effect others that need to heed the warnings call. I have given a very clear opportunity for someone to reclaim a karma not undoable by charity alone. I urge others to do the same as there are many married men out there in the same position I know a few. I’m sure there are many women visa versa, in the same boat. But one cannot say I am only responsible for myself so I can do what ever I want to others, doesn’t work like that. Time is on the wall so we must be specific about what we want.

Wow, Eddie, that was a hell of an episode. Emotionally raw is right. Cathartic, certainly. It’s easy for someone to say just forget/ignore all that stuff, but I know from a sort-of similar experience how hard that can be. All I can say is to keep in mind that you can only control your own actions, not those of someone else, and there may be things you will never know. Sometimes it’s just a matter of coming to terms with that. My hat’s off to you for doing this episode, and for balancing the serious with the silly. Cheers, man!

Regarding the 24kbps mono format. It was fine for central. But the stereo sounds of NYC in your Overnightscapes are so rich. I did a quick direct comparison of your segment on Central (where you were also walking i think) and the difference was major so I am glad you are going to keep on with that in 128 stereo.

As far as the 24kbps demanding less mental energy, I have always thought that the more gaps in information coming across, the more mental energy it would take since our brain would be trying to fill in the blanks. I am kind of inclined to think that what is special about the 24kbps and the similar AM sound is it has a more distant smaller sound that is conducive to the sense of a broadcast coming from a distant place and also is a little easier to have as background because you feel less saturated and surronded by the vibe so in that sense it is demanding less attention.

Hey Bob! No, no offense taken at all. I was more amused than anything else. I’m not into seafood really; about all I can think of is Red Lobster. And yeah, Nestle bought the Beich factory and I think it did close. My cousin worked there for a few years.

I’m planning to keep going at about the rate I’m going now with the show, with two (possibly three) new shows a week and a batch of older eps released around the weekend until I get through the backlog. You’ll definitely hear more from me! I’m going to release them at the 24 bitrate that PQ and Frank mentioned, especially with the bundles of episodes.

Yeah, I listen to pretty much all the Internet radio shows with headphones and/or away from my daughter’s/co-workers’ range of hearing, just in case. No problem here. I downloaded your most recent Static Radio episode and should have time to listen tonight.

I did do that personality test once. I think I came out as INFP or something along those lines.

Good point about the subtlety thing. (Ever notice how the letter “b” always hides within that word, almost like it’s demonstrating subtlety itself?) As for the guitar thing though, no, that girl directly stated that she hated everything about it. I didn’t mention it in the show, but we were just generally incompatible; I think I just zeroed in on the guitar thing as kind of a shorthand reason why it didn’t work out when really there was more to it.

And I completely misunderstood you on the Beatles thing! I thought you were saying you liked them but didn’t like the cliche statement. Yeah, you’re going to hate the episode I do about them… sorry in advance!

Thanks, Frank. I hope that timeline entanglement thing can’t really happen. What if you got entangled into a timeline where you were driving a car and another timeline where you were not? Could be disastrous: am I on the highway going 65 MPH or standing still by the side of the road? Imagine if you’re walking along and you find yourself getting into a fight/walking home safely… that would be very confusing. Automatic scorekeepers in bowling alleys would fall apart every time you threw a strike/didn’t throw a strike. It could even get to the point where people are afraid to get out of bed/not get out of bed in the morning.

You can both do a Jung personality test and see what ur personalities are. I’m extremely introverted for example I’m INTP.

Instead of subtlety, maybe she really means that she doesn’t like stuff with alterior motives. You must be specific about the definition to pin point what you don’t like about something like I’m sure she would prefer you to tell her subtley that she had some spinach in her teeth rather than shouting it all our the resteraunt, so surely in that case she likes subtlety, so it’s the meaning behind it that she’s on about whether she realizes it or not. And if she does not, recognize this, then perhaps she should get to know herself a little better.

Also instead of saying I don’t like the guitar maybe it’s more like I don’t like the long rock solos and prefer a picking or soft strum style, n stuff……lol

Ya I don’t like the popularity of the Beatles, too overrated and cliche, if they where less well known I’d probably like them. So many bands better then thm though.

Hope I wasn’t overly harsh on the name thing, it wasn’t intended that way, just new to me and the name is halting to say, so it is a little harder to get used to. I certainly think people should go with what they want. Thanks for the info, I haven’t been to Bloomington in quite a while, I used to go to a seafood buffet a long time ago with my in laws over there, I can’t even remember the name of it, but it was supposed to be great, at least for living so far from the ocean. I think I recall the Double Nickel from days gone by and I used to love going to what was then the Kathryn Beich candy factory, but now I think Nestle owns it or its closed. You used to be able to get bags of broken candy bars really cheap, but they still tasted great.

I look forward to listening to your shows as they hit the ONSUG site, it is great to have another Midwesterner on the channel to balance out all the East Coast folks a little bit more.

P.S. Just a word of warning, since you have small kids and a nice office to work in, Static Radio, is a bit vulgar, and in your face sometimes, so it is best enjoyed in privacy or with headphones on. It can be funny, but you never know what will be mentioned.

I’ll echo Eddie’s comment about Chad’s segment in the show. I’m going to have to re-listen to catch it all! Now that I’ve been in one of these, it’s even more fascinating to me to see how seven or eight different hosts can take the same topic and go in completely different directions with it (and all very interesting directions as well). I also have to say that PQ’s voice is ideal for hosting a nighttime radio show like this: great delivery, everything he says is very clear, and he gives it a wonderful enthusiasm.

Eddie… wow, I love all the comments! In order: 1) Can’t remember if I said “could care less” or “couldn’t care less,” but you’re correct about the meaning there. 2) A lot of those kindergarten stories have been repeated ad nauseum by my mom, and for some reason it was a very memorable year for me. First grade I can barely remember at all. Asberger’s is kind of a mild mild form of autism. The social aspect is a lot easier, but there is some need for order, making lists, etc. I suspect a lot more people have it than are ever diagnosed. I have generalized anxiety disorder, which wasn’t diagnosed properly until I was about 29. And thanks so much for the compliment! 3) Don’t worry, I won’t tell. It’s from a pretty obscure source, and speeded up considerably as well as turned backwards. Kind of a happy fluke, that one. 4) I didn’t mean that I thought it was a cliche to have the Beatles as your favorite band, just that, well, I’ve run into that attitude before from others. I’m planning to do an episode about the songs of the Beatles soon, probably episode #50 or 51. And yes, you’re right about my wife’s laugh. She holds nothing back when she laughs… especially in the movie theater when we saw The Muppets!

Hey Bob, thanks for the welcome and the shout-out on your show! I am familiar with your old stomping grounds of Decatur… small world. Let’s see, stuff you mentioned: ISU is still Illinois State University; I do work for an ins. company (on the admin side of things); Monical’s is in Blm-Normal (we have three of them!) and I am addicted to the place; all things considered this town is a pretty nice area; and Bloomington is a big town for bars/pubs. We have the U.S. Cellular Coliseum now (lots of country music acts), and we used to have a great restaurant called the Double Nickel that was based on the fifties but was closed about ten years ago. (I still miss that place!) On the ISU campus is a great little theater called the Normal Theater which plays a lot of classic/foreign/independent films.

I enjoy listening to Morning Commute. There is a nice easygoing feel to the show, makes me feel like I’m just riding along with you, chatting away. I haven’t checked out Static Radio yet, but will make it a point to do so. Thanks again, and I hope “Shambles” does grow on you. If not, just call me “Illinois” or “Bloomington” or something. I’m enjoying some of your childhood memories, how do you remember so much? What is the definition of aspergers? Is that the same as ADHD ? I have a version of OCD called pure O. Anyways I’m hooked this is one of the best shows on here, your a perfect fit for the onsug universe.

What a fantastic and often hilarious episode. PQ (and this message will be of interest to Frank too), you mentioned the idea of listeners releasing shows on onsug. I have been releasing a show called Anybody’s Guess on archive.org since August, to a large part inspired by the Overnightscape/Sheps style of longform monologue format. I just released episode 47 on archive. It would be wonderful if I could begin releasing episodes onto onsug.com as well as archive.org. My thought is that perhaps for the month of December I could package my earlier episodes into bundles for onsug release (similar to what Brian Jude has done in the past) and then starting in January I could maybe release my new episodes onto onsug and archive at the same time?

Most of my shows are longform monologues. Some are longform field recordings. A few are compilations from public domain and Creative Commons sources. They all appear through the link listed here, each month’s worth of shows on its own archive page (a format I blatantly stole from Frank, hope you don’t mind!).

Your voice is perfect with a cold it reminds me of that song little fluffy clouds, “the sky was red and yellow and on fire and…” that song at the end was kick ass reminds me of ammie Mann, “one is the loneliest number…” from the film magnolia. Also love love love ur laugh. By the way what was the funny bit in that other song that had u cracking up, I didn’t hear it.

Hey Frank, another great show. I’d love to hear more shows with the Mystery Guest. You may be best off making it a sort of informal thing, just whenever the two of you can get together. This episode was a lot of fun to listen to, and there’s certainly room for more like it on the Overnightscape channel. My suggestion: just keep it loose and have fun.

Eddie, it was a beautiful psychic moment to hear the song at the end of the episode. I had been humming along, as best I could, with what you had hummed earlier, trying to get the song in my head, after your show, I listened to the last song for some moments before i recognized it.
