I came up with the idea for The Overnightscape on Thursday, March 13, 2003. I was on my way home from work in NYC, riding the PATH train back to NJ. Here’s exactly what I wrote on my Palm Pilot:

I went home, set up my recording system, and started recording the show at around 9:55 PM – less than 3 hours after I wrote down my idea for the show and its name (wow, just think, it could have been called Nightscans…) What I recorded was The Overnightscape Beta #1 – the first of two test shows I did before releasing the first official episode two weeks later.

Remembering “The Rampler” with the first, middle, and last 5 minute segments of the show… The first 5 minutes of “The Rampler #1″ from August 14, 2008. In 2008, after 5 years of doing The Overnightscape, I was looking for a new method of doing the show that would take less time and effort. This experiment in field recording became “The Rampler”, and it was such a different experience, I took it in a whole new direction. It very quickly grew in popularity, largely due to my involvement in the “Andy Kaufman Lives” phenomenon. This led to an opportunity to bring the show to a real radio station – WFMU. But as 2009 wore on, the show’s popularity (at least as I perceived it) diminished, and the pressures of being on the “real” radio took away some of the spirit of spontaneity that the show had in its early months. And then… WFMU canceled the show. A little over a year after it had begun, The Rampler was finished.

I chose to continue my Internet radio recordings here on “The Overnightscape Underground” (which has been going great), and drop “The Rampler” name. While it is a good name, and I had a blast doing it, the name “The Rampler” is associated with energy and vibes that I would rather put behind me.

But what a wild ride it was!! This 15-minute audio piece is a brief encapsulation of the whole experience… but it’s all available for you to listen to…

Frank Nora Archive (FNA)

I’ve been doing Internet talk radio shows for nearly seven years now. From “The Overnightscape” to “The Rampler” to the current project, “The Overnightscape Underground”, I have released over 1,800 audio files, totalling over 65 days in length.

You can download the entirety of this in a new archive I created called “Frank Nora Archive” (“FNA” for short). There are 47 ZIP files you can download, totalling 15.5 GB. There is also a checklist you can print out to keep track of things.

The audio format for FNA is 24kbps, mono MP3. While “lo-fi”, I think it sounds pretty good – kind of like listening to an old AM radio. I may release everything in the “hi-fi” format at some point, but for now this is fine.

FNA is based on my previous “OnsugBox” project – but expands upon it. Additionally, I will be adding each new month to FNA as I finish them.

If you use Firefox, you can install the free add-on “DownloadThemAll” to make it easier to download all 47 files. Or, of course, you can download them individually.

Background music loop for an imaginary theme park land called “World Gateway”. This idea was inspired by the the “world music” trend of the 1990s, and generic “world” themes such as video game levels, Rainforest Cafe, etc. My initial idea was of “world laser tag” – like laser tag, but with the “world” theme instead of the generic sci-fi theme. Then I thought about some kind of indoor theme park with such a theme… or it could be one “land” of a much larger theme park… anyway, it’s still a very vague idea, but I love the idea of making background music for an imaginary place like this…

This one-hour music loop consists of 27 tracks created by Kevin MacLeod, and released on his website, incompetech.com. The songs are licensed under Creative Commons “Attribution 3.0″ – which means he gives permission for people to use the music in just about any way as long as they give him credit. I chose the set of songs and the sequence. I have to say, I was amazed to find such perfect music for this whimsical little project – Kevin is incredibly talented – I suggest you check out his site if you are looking for music!

Mike Jittlov, creator and star of The Wizard of Speed and Time (and many other wonderful things), released a set of fonts and dingbats for the Apple Macintosh back in 1996. Included with the fonts were six amazing read me files which were composed using the fonts. I’ve always been amazed at these files… but unfortunately, you need Mac OS 9 to see them properly. So, I decided to take screen shots of all the files and stitch them together into one huge PNG file (628 x 23652 pixels) – which should be easily viewable in any current web browser.

I sent this to Mr. Jittlov himself, and he posted them (split back into six files), along with the original font download here.

Vacation and Box

As you may have heard on yesterday’s recording, “The Radio Vacation”, I am going to take a few weeks off from recording and releasing stuff. I’ll be back next month (November 2009).

In other news, I am very close to completing OnsugBox – a nearly 1,500-hour collection of just about all of my recorded work – up to and including yesterday’s recording! The main version will be around 75 GB and the Portable Version (with a lower audio bitrate) will fit on a 16 GB flash drive. My hope is that people can buy their own media and mail it to someone who already has the data, and is able to copy the data and then mail the media back to them. (Online distribution is also possible…) Stay tuned to onsug.com to see when it will be available.

The Rampler ends its run on WFMU

Though I was hoping to continue the show, The Rampler was not picked up for the Fall 2009 – Spring 2010 WFMU schedule.

There are two episodes remaining – I’ll do the show this Friday night / Saturday morning (October 3 – my birthday), and next week, October 10.

The reason for the cancellation, as I understand it, is twofold. First, it’s a very competetive schedule – a lot of very talented people want to get on the air on WFMU. Secondly, The Rampler really is on a very different “wavelength” from the other programming on the station, and so has been having a hard time “fitting in”.

I do think that given time, The Rampler may have been able to be a success at WFMU – but I understand it’s very hard to give a show like mine that kind of time, considering how many other shows are clamoring to get on.

So while I am disappointed, I do understand the decision and I think it may be for the best. Can only bash a square peg into a round hole for so long before it becomes tiresome for everyone involved.

I’ll remain on good terms with the station, and I may be back on the air in some capacity in the future.

With this, my sole remaining “radio” outlet will be The Overnightscape Underground (onsug.com) – which I do plan on continuing (and it’s been going great, and is better than the WFMU show anyway).
