You mentioned Ralph Kramden. It’s funny to see what he got away with. On radio you had The Bickersons, who were always threatening each other (and not being very funny in the process.)
I find the wives were more aggressive on radio (Sapphire Stevens much more aggressive than Kingfish on Amos and Andy, for example.)
As far as Mary goes, she just wasn’t ever funny.

It was hard to be that ‘not funny’ on the Benny Program. She did it.
Gleason had some combination of charisma, timing and sheer nerve. The man never rehearsed! Time passage has dulled his popularity, indeed as his characters were pretty much all forms of stereotypes.
