Continuing the audiobook version of my “failed science fiction novel” Severe Repair. This time: CUPLINE 19: THE MILDRED CORK and CUPLINE 20: CLOWN CENTAUR ARCHITECT, read by computer voice “Azure Harper MAI-Voice-2.1”.

You know, it’s been quite a trip revisiting Severe Repair by having a computer voice read it. As I wrote most of it around 30 years ago, much of it has faded from memory, so it’s almost like hearing it for the first time. As much as I loved the last two entries in this series, this one was back to me cringing and questioning my younger self. Why all these tangents? Why not continue the main storyline? While these two Cuplines have some redeeming qualities, overall it just leaves me shaking my head… why the heck couldn’t I have just focused on the main storyline, and finished one book’s worth of story? As it is, these two Cuplines were very hard to listen to at times. I’ve grown and changed as a person, and I can’t imagine writing some of this stuff now. But… once again, it’s not called a “failed science fiction novel” for nothing…

Continuing the audiobook version of my “failed science fiction novel” Severe Repair. This time: CUPLINE 18: A ROAD MAP OF ARCTICA, read by computer voice “Azure Harper MAI-Voice-2.1”.

Damn, just like last Cupline, a really, really enjoyed listening to this one. Must have been around 30 years ago that I wrote it, and I must not have revisited it for a long time, because some stuff came as a surprise to me. This is a very different sort of section… it continues with Daptin Gone in his Warhome having to drive a million miles down Twicvion Lane… and he decides to create a “real life” for himself, winding up here on this world, circa 1996, living in Jersey City and working in NYC. He works for this guy Comma, who is a parody of myself. I really loved this section, and once again, I’m angry at my younger self that I just gave up on the book… it’s so good at times, that if I had continued, it seems I could have made something of it. When I talk to people about it, they say I could still return to it… but of course, easier said than done… but as I mentioned last time, I do think I will have to continue it, in some way…

Continuing the audiobook version of my “failed science fiction novel” Severe Repair. This time: CUPLINE 17: FOREMAN ITTENER PIER, read by computer voice “Azure Harper MAI-Voice-2”.

Wow, I really enjoyed listening to this one. More than any other section so far, my memories of it have faded so much since I wrote it around 30 years ago, that it was like reading something I’ve never read before. And it’s just one long section of the same story. The story of Prince Ferrajalt and Hilltop Jone Rallity and the Stormbolthouses and Lunatether and the Tock Hounds… damn, I was really on a roll back then. It’s upsetting to think that with so much potential, I just gave up on Severe Repair… it could have been something great. Who knows, maybe I can get back to it… I think I will, even if it’s just to complete a few storylines in a limited way.

Wow, a lot of great stuff here, along with terrible stuff, as usual for Severe Repair. I can see the book that could have been, between the cracks, and it’s really a shame that I was never able to pull it all together. I don’t think I’ve revisited these sections for a long time, a lot of it was new to me, as the memory of it has faded away over the years. What a strange experience.

This was quite an interesting find. The tape is simply labeled “11/28/01”, for some reason, but the short recording on it is from 12/19/01. It turned out to be notes for my failed science fiction novel Severe Repair, especially interesting because here on Tape Land I’m in the middle of an audiobook version of Severe Repair using a computer voice. Though short, there are some very interesting notes, including some ideas for future editions of Severe Repair that never came to be.

Notes: Wednesday, December 19, 2001, 12:34pm, on the Parkway South, going down to see my friend Mike to see The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) again, 18 days off from work, Severe Repair, Yellowhaus, Carne’s, Nurship, Perkins, Fry Friend, Superior Chapter, going to malls to read and edit the book, E-ZPass, Millicent, Tiny Little Owl, Route 9 under the weekday sun, 8:35pm, saw Lord of the Rings again, Onion Ring Friend, idea for Book 2 or Book 3, Demolish All, Daptin’s Land, Red Archer Booze, Sleap Drassy, Curbside Line Tattoos, Burchard and Keepy, Beautiful Disaster Area, a little broken train set, Crosscountry Canada, to go into that world, Fuzzy Daupner, Trojan Horse.
