I have a CD set of comedian interviews conducted by Terry Gross, and several of them were from within about a year after 9-11. They refer to it pretty much exclusively as “September 11th.” I’m guessing the switch to “9/11” happened once the next September 11th came around. I’d never realized that though, interesting.

I remember referring to it ( in the days recently after the tragedy) as Nine One One (as in the emergency phone call). It wasn’t long after that I heard it referred to as “nine eleven”. I don’t think I have heard it called “Nine One One” since then.
