  1. I can’t figure out whether Uncle Fletcher is hard of hearing or just so convinced of his own preconceptions that he can’t accept that no application form is required to join the Thimble Club. The fact that he is prone to exclaiming “Fine!” apropos of nothing could mean he misheard someone, or it could just be a part of his own internal dialogue. Despite his profound good-heartedness, he had to be very frustrating to deal with. Maybe if they had fixed him the popcorn he was hinting around for, they could have squeezed in a few words in between bites.

  2. I think it’s been sort-of established (maybe) that Uncle Fletcher acts senile for his own advantages. Despite his enormous generosity, it’s opposite (selfishness) rears it’s head often – but his selfishness always seems to be in the form of attention/me me me rather than a financial one.
