In the UK televised wrestling was still using the two-out-of-three falls format for matches right up until it went off the air in the 1990s, for much the same reasons: it spun out matches so that you had to have fewer wrestlers on the card for each show, thereby keeping the wages down. We also used to have drawn matches, usually to maintain ongoing feuds and preserve the pride of various star wrestlers. In the UK this was achieved by matches having a set number of rounds, so that if by the last round there were either no falls or the wrestlers had a fall each, the match was declared a draw. (Having a fixed number of rounds also meant that the TV company could restrict the length of matches, as, although live, the Saturday afternoon wrestling had a fixed time slot – it had to end before the football results came in at five o’clock).

    We also had a ‘Skull Murphy’ in the UK, with a shaved head (and beard, as I recall), who was a second generation wrestler who took the name and look as a tribute to the original. He was a heel who started in the early 1970s and was still wrestling in the 1990s.

    I can see that I’m going to have to do a show about UK wrestling at some point…
