  1. Eddie — the whole on the phone in public topic. i think the sonder factor is big. for me anyway. and to me it is a sad part of the cell phone. there are fewer opportunities for spontaneous random interactions. the other thing though is …. social discomfort i think. as i am approaching a person on a narrow sidewalk who is not on a phone there is that discomfort in the last 20-30 feet deciding if i am expected to catch their eye, to say hello, am i feeling confident or shy and inferior and should i try and look them in the eye to establish my confidence. and i live smack in the middle of a lot of student housing so the person coming down the sidewalk is often a beautiful young woman. which intensifies all those anxieties….but when they are on the phone i have zero anxiety…and in fact if i am in a “gawking” mood i can do it with impunity.

  2. Thanks Nate! Yes! Technology certainly has changed the way we interact. I think before the ability if being “connected” 24/7 it was genuinely enthralling and exciting too meet someone you know or spark up a bit of Sonder. Nowadays people tend to avoid it, including me. It is a shame. Maybe there is a way to rekindle that interest in others. I notice when travelling in Asian countries this effect comes back due to the feeling of adventure between westerners anyway….
