Rubénerd Show 307: The Doc Sleaze episode (11/21/15)

55:00 – A follow–up episode in Overnightscape Underground spirit to Doc Sleaze’s latest audio emissions on the network. Topics include looking back, British royalty in Australia, comedy shows and tired sci-fi origin stories (from Sleazecast 10); the expensive and surly proprietors of corner shops (from the latest Overnightscape Central); and his tongue in cheek look at stalking, with reality TV stars and online (from Sleazecast 9). Also includes a bonus correction from Doc regarding the etymology of soccer!

  1. As a fan of the Doc I must say this was an awesome show. Along with the one you did about Manny, I predict an impetus to others who will do this type of show in the near future.

I was tempted to do this about subjects from a few of your shows a while back, but I never did one.

    Wonderful fun.

  2. I finally managed to listen to this whilst driving to Salisbury to see my mother, (it’s interesting to learn that the Adelaide Salisbury is a working class district as mine is decidedly middle class, although the bit I was born in, Bemerton Heath, is pretty down market and working class). What can I say? I’m flattered that anyone would want to do something inspired by my ramblings. (I must admit, that I approached this podcast with a certain amount of tepidation – normally when my ‘name’ is featured in the title of something online it is because I’m about to get flamed by someone I’ve upset).

On the subject of internet privacy, it might be a generational thing, or just that I’m a very private person, but I’m constantly surprised by the amount of information about themselves that people put out there. These days though, I’m less worried about the stalkers than the scammers and our own governments gathering information about us, (although, in my case, I freely admit that the latter worry is ludicrous, as I’ve worked for so many government departments over the years that they already know just about everything there is to know about me). Of course, you are quite right that the fact that people do put this persomal information in the public domain in no way makes them complicit in any theft or abuse of the information by criminals and the like. The rape analogy is actually very apt: a woman can dress ‘provocactively’, but that still doesn’t ‘legitimise’ any sexually assualt she might sufffer – that was a decision made entirely by the offender. Equally, internet scam artists and identity thieves all have the choice not to exploit the openness of others.

But, to return to the original point – I’m genuinely flattered and happy that someone has found my old podcasts not just entertaing, but also thought-provoking. Of course, if I wanted to be really ‘meta’, I should do a podcast about this podcast – Doc Sleaze on Ruben on Doc Sleaze….
