Onsug Saloon 1 (7/18/25)

1:18:28 – Onsug Saloon continues from last week’s experimental show Onsug Radio Shuffle Mode. It’s in the same format, with random 209 second clips from the entire Onsug Radio archive, shuffled, each introduced by a computer voice. The first clip is chosen from the shuffle, so things get off to a good start, but the rest are completely random, from a pool of over 259,000 clips. This time, the set of clips are updated to include the complete archive up to last month, June 2025. Like last time, I think it’s better not to include show titles, as the titles are spoken in the audio. But I will include a reference list which will allow you to find the shows in need be. I really like how this one turned out, just like last time, and I intend to continue with this experiment.

Onsug Saloon was originally a short-lived project that began ten years ago, in July 2015. It was a chat room where random Onsug Radio shows would be played on a live stream, 24/7. The name came to mind, and I thought it would be a great name for this new project.

Onsug Radio Shuffle Mode 1 (7/12/25)

1:18:28 – Onsug Radio Shuffle Mode is an experimental continuation of previous project Onsug Radio Previews, from 2023–2024. That one had a semi-random, but curated, set of show clips, each 209 seconds long (3:29), and each introduced by a computer voice.

This new concept uses the same set of clips (the full Onsug archive up to Sep. 2023), but has a different computer voice, talking faster and just saying the show title. It’s also fully random (except for a first clip, which is chosen from random options).

I like how this one turned out, and I’m planning on doing more episodes in the near future. It’s a great way to listen to Onsug Radio, getting a cross-section of everything within the archive.

(Since the show titles and clip numbers are spoken in the audio, I won’t include them here. But the one without a title, due to a tag issue, was The Meanderer (7/21/21).)

The Midnight Citizen 294: “Full Tilt Patriotic

Join Mike in the studio late on a Saturday night. Tonight, check your commie cynicism at the door and give yourself a little permission to be a proud Ameri-CAN on this 4th of July weekend. Go on, now — call a ceasefire on the whole “Us vs. Them” thing. Just watch yourself a little “Back Up, Terry” and I promise, it’ll all feel right as rain…

Now that we’re all feeling appropriately patriotic, join me as I check in on the newest branch of the armed services, the United States Space Force. Who are they and what are they doin’ with all those golf ball antennas that look like Spaceship Earth?

Anyway… Once the fireworks are over, I return to bein’ a mean old man, and try to get at what the cause of all this cynical ire in me — and maybe most of us — really is. Maybe it’s, like I’ve said before on the show, all this truth you learn that has no where to go if you don’t have kids. Existential indigestion? Or maybe it’s just the textbooks they gave us when we were kids ourselves — those that taught us that history was all in the past and everything these days is mostly a-O.K. Yeah, that’s probably it.

Later… After I play you some music, I talk about small town crime and the Dixie Mafia, and one shocking murder that went down in Biloxi, Miss. in the 1980s. It inspired Edward Humes’s excellent book “Mississippi Mud”, which itself maybe even kicked off that whole sick, wonderful obsession we all have with True Crime.

Also… Sad Juggalos, that great date movie “Operation Dumbo Drop”, and a toast to Michael Madsen, who passed this week at 67.
