Tape Land 10 – Baltimore (8/23/01)

20:00 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

In August 2001 I drove down to Baltimore to see a college friend. This short tape mostly documents the drive down, though there’s a little on the way back. Whenever I hear this tape, I think about how it was less than 3 weeks before 9/11… how I had no idea it was coming…

I did keep in touch with my friend from time to time after the visit, but sadly, she passed away in 2012.

Tape Land 9 – OLD (1969-1973)

55:51 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Here’s a very special tape from my childhood, which contains my earliest recordings. Labeled “OLD”, I dubbed the tape in the 1980’s to a new cassette to make sure it was preserved. This recording is taken from the dub.

Side 1 is from September 15-16, 1969, a few weeks before my 2nd birthday. This is my first recording, as far as I can tell. My parents interview me and give me a bath. I may have played parts of this on Onsug before, but this is the first time it’s being presented in its entirety.

Side 2 contains several sections. The first part is my father interviewing me, on 11/16/69 and then 2/22/70. In the 1970 section, I talk a lot about Sesame Street, which had premiered just 3 months earlier. I previously released this section as Cut and Shoot. The next part is from 11/24/73, when I’m 6. My brother, age 3, is also on the tape. I previously released this part as Tornado Warning. The final section, which may be from that same day, or at least within the next few weeks, has me recording and talking alone and also talking to my brothers. I released part of this section as Bad Hole, but much of this section was previously unreleased.

Tape Land 8 – ABM Show (10/15/87)

1:07:19 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Here’s a full episode of my college radio show with Mad Mike, Anything But Monday. It was a fill-in show, from 9 to 11 AM on Thursday, October 15, 1987. I had transferred to NYU at this point, and I had to take the last train to NJ the night before to be there for the show. Like a lot of other ABM tapes, some bits and pieces from this recording have been heard on Onsug before, but the entire show is being heard here for the first time since it aired nearly 30 years ago.

The word of the day is “coolant”.

41:05 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Another audio adventure with Peter, originally presented as a 12-minute edit on The Overnightscape #68. But the full 41-minute version has remained unreleased… until now!

Tape Land 6 – ABM Show Cool! (1986)

49:04 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

This tape is labeled “ABM Show Cool!”, but doesn’t have any dates written on it. It’s from my college radio show “Anything But Monday”, which I did with Mad Mike.

Side One has one of our earliest episodes – I estimate it to be from March 3, 1986, though it could be the week before or after. It has a lot of prepared skits and jokes, and some of these clips have been released on Onsug before.

Side Two is from September 29, 1986, and has a much different tone. I don’t think any audio of this episode has ever been released before. The Weekly World News figures prominently, which is always good.

Tape Land 5 – Cosmos/Drunk (1984-1985)

1:14:25 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

This is a great example of a cassette tape that was used multiple times and overdubbed, with layer upon layer of audio. I originally dubbed my vinyl copy of the Cosmos soundtrack onto the tape, but then much more stuff was added.

On side one is the long-lost 1984 revival of my parody TV station “Channel 67 WWW”, which I originally did in Montana 1980. I had completely forgotten that this existed. It is quite insane.

On side two, what happened is, my college roommate got drunk and I wasn’t there, but his friends used my tape and my boombox to record him. I didn’t find out about it till later. This was most likely in the Fall of 1985.

For my Internet radio station Bluffcosm in 2000, I released the first few minutes of this as A Hairy One. When I recently digitized the whole tape, I was completely surprised to find that the audio continued on much further… I guess I stopped listening after a period of silence. It’s amazing audio of drunk college students in a dorm in 1985.

Sprinkled throughout are other surprises, such as several radio airchecks and fragments of songs. So much happening on a single tape from over 30 years ago…

Tape Land 4 – After the ABM Show (4/16/86)

28:41 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

More impossibly obscure audio from the archive… this time from over 30 years ago.

I had a college radio show with Mad Mike called Anything But Monday, which began in February 1986, but by April 1986, we were kicked off the air for our on-air antics. Two of our fellow DJs went on the air later that week and “dedicated” their show to us, making some nasty comments about us. I must have known they were planning on talking about us, because I recorded some of the show. I’m glad I did, because it’s fascinating to listen to…
