Rubenerd Show 430: The two mugs episode (2/21/25)

14:22 – Bit of a weirder one today; talking about the time last week when the trolls won! But I got some amazing feedback and some help, so maybe there are lessons here I can pass on. Have you heard of this thing called the block button? I should do that! Thanks again, will be a more normal episode next time.

The Obtuse Angle podcast archive added to Onsug Radio

Onsug Radio 811 – The Obtuse Angle

“A man with one functional brain cell expounds upon life, liberty and the pursuit of coherence.”

“Steve Dupont was known for his rants on the Obtuse Angle podcast. After publishing his debut novel Therein Lies the Problem in 2007, Steve left the literary world behind, returning to graduate school and ultimately becoming a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist.”

Steve Dupont, from Birmingham, Alabama, produced his podcast, The Obtuse Angle, from May 2005 to June 2007. After the show ended, Steve pursued a new career as a registered dietitian. You can still find him today at stevedupont.com

In those early days of podcasting, I was a fan of The Obtuse Angle, and Steve also listened to my show, The Overnightscape. We would mention each other’s shows, send in comments and emails, and occasionally record audio for the other show.

A few months back, I thought of The Obtuse Angle and started looking to see if any of the episodes were preserved. I was immensely pleased to find that a near-complete archive had been posted to The Internet Archive by archivist “apphands” in December 2021. I found few early episodes which were missing, in another archive posted by archivist Sketch the Cow in March 2019. Then, using the Wayback Machine, I was able to build a full list of episodes, along with show notes. In the end, the archive was complete, except for four episodes. If anyone has copies of these episodes, let me know, and I will add them to the archive.

I contacted Steve Dupont, and he gave his blessing to this new collected archive of The Obtuse Angle.

The show fits in extremely well with the other shows here in Onsug Radio, and I am thrilled to preserve The Obtuse Angle for future generations.

Macho Condor Palms (2/18/25)

6:07:38 – Macho Condor is a concept show, last heard over 10 years ago, which helped inspire the creation of the Other Side of The Overnightscape.

I recently thought of the idea of listening to a whole month’s worth of Other Sides, and I chose May 2024, because it contains a very special audio piece called “Audio Collage Poetry Soundscape” which I was thinking of. (It also starts with a space launch, and ends with cavemen learning to fly, very “2001”.) And at around 6 hours, it relates to the concept of “what can a night of audio be?” So I figured I’d bring back Macho Condor for this one-off release.

Previous Macho Condor editions were called Deluxe, Gold, and Julius – so for this one I wanted another kind of superlative identifier. I chose “Palms”, partially inspired by the TV show “Wild Palms”, and also the whole “vaporwave” vision of a fake 1980s with palm trees. And, I suppose, the invocation of exotic places the phrase “Palms” suggests.

So this then is a collection of all the Other Sides from May 2024, from The Overnightscape episodes 2114–2122. Recontextualized as a “night of audio” it makes for quite an interesting listen of night comfort and mystery.

Tape Land 180 – Moodbruck – Nightstation (April–July 2012) [released 2/8/25]

7:45:33 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

“This is Moodbruck, my series of notes on the Overnightscape system.”

I used to record audio notes on the various ideas I was working on, which were not meant for release. However, in retrospect, these are very interesting recordings, and I feel they fit perfectly into Tape Land. This series of recordings is about the idea for a version of a project called “Nightstation”.

Though it’s now 13 years later, Nightstation continues to be an enigma to me. It’s a project that has never been fully realized, though it always seems to have so much potential. However, many of its multitudinous versions and ideas have informed my main project, Onsug Radio.
