Tape Land 101 – Daily Podcast From Another Place (2004-2005)

11:20:59 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic recording from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to release more of my archives.

Daily Podcast From Another place ran for 101 days, from October 20, 2004 to January 28, 2005, and was among the very first wave of podcasts. I had just started podcasting my show, The Overnightscape, earlier in the month, and started this one as an experiment, using material from my Bluffcosm.com Internet radio station.

DPFAP was meant to be mysterious and lacking in context. The name was inspired by the “Little Man From Another Place” from Twin Peaks. The last episode, #101, included a portion of The Overnightscape #100 (1/23/05) with a message about the end of DPFAP.

While all the tracks played on DPFAP are available elsewhere in the Onsug Radio archive, I combined  the tracks here so you can hear the entire thing in one audio file, in the original order and bitrate.

Track List:

Tape Land 100 – Moodbruck #1 (8/5/10)

27:28 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

It’s Tape Land 100! For this occasion, I wanted to delve into a new category of recordings for Tape Land – digital recordings that were never released. There was a time when I recorded a lot of stuff that was never released, for one reason or another. I have always intended to start adding these to Tape Land, and #100 is a good place to start. This first digital recording is the first “Moodbruck” – where I talk about my thoughts on the Onsug project in general, and a range of other things. I did this more to get my thoughts recorded, and didn’t necessarily plan on releasing them. But in retrospect, they are very interesting in the history of Onsug. (And notice how I pronounced “Onsug” differently back then).

As far as the Tape Land project as a whole, many hundreds of cassettes remain to be explored for release – not to mention recordings in other audio formats, tape collection I have from other people, video tapes with original content (VHS and Beta), and the aforementioned unreleased digital recordings. So, Tape Land has more than enough raw material to keep going for years and years.

Notes: First recording talking about “Moodbruck” – a thought experiment for a new Internet radio project, social media, media theory, “your late night broadcast”, first impressions, virtual audio worlds, “framing”, Schmerltz shopping, automated systems, WFMU, “spearhead”, cultural trends, concentrated meaning – down to the level of letters and numbers, “traveling partners”, video aspect.
