  1. Frank,

I think there is some misunderstanding about the whole people just say “coke” in the south thing. It’s a bit more nuanced.

I wanted to give you my view on what is up with the Soda versus Coke thing in the South. Growing up under the influence of David Letterman, my brother and I used to refer to them as a nice cold beverage. As in, “mom, how about a nice cold beverage” She might say, ok we’ve got Coke, Tea, kool-aid, oj, or water, and I would say I’ll take Coke. Or for fun because it seems like my whole life I’ve been hearing about what people call soda in other places, you might say for fun, Give me a soda pop, or hey guys lets drink a pop. Irony was always a thing, even with young gen x’ers.

Now that is not to say that I or other people I knew would ask for a Coke if they actually wanted a Pepsi, or a Dr. Pepper or some other specific beverage. In that case from my experiences you would hear the person asking for the specific beverage.

Where the broad use of the word Coke comes in, is in the theoretical discussion of beverages as in:

    Q. What are you serving for drinks at the kids party? A. We’ll probably just have cokes and juice
In this case, you may very well choose to serve Coke, or you may choose to serve whatever soft drink was available

Or if your choice of beverage changes, perhaps you drink whatever carbonated beverage is available and someone asks you
    Q. What do you drink with breakfast A. I’m not one for coffee, I usually just have a coke with my eggs and grits.

Or if you have friends and you say what do you want to drink, They might just say get me a coke, or get me a diet coke,

and when you go to get the drinks, you bring them whatever you have.

Perhaps you go to a restaurant that only serves Pepsi. It would be perfectly acceptable to do just ask for a coke. The waiter may say we only serve Pepsi, or they might not give a damn, and they just bring you what is closest.

  2. about phones in breaking bad.

The show is very true to reality in many ways, including the widespread use of “burner phones”. Cheap phones you buy with pre paid service, drug dealers use them and toss them away, so its usually the $10 phones from walmart or the like, and they are usualy simple bar phones or flip phones.
