At risk of sounding like one of those pedantic commentators – football is also soccer in the UK. At least, it was when I was growing up in the seventies and, as I recall into the eighties. Quite when we started insisting it was some kind of pernicious ‘Americanism’ I don’t know – the term ‘soccer’ originated in the UK, after all. It apparently derives from shortening the first bit of ‘Association Football’ to ‘Assoc’, which was then further corrupted into ‘Socca’ and eventually ‘soccer’.
I actually meant to comment after Manny’s recent ‘Special Delivery; how much I agreed with him about internet trolls, but forgot, so I’ll do it here! I’ve never allowed comments on my main website because of these sad cases and the comments on my blog are so moderated that nowadays there’s only one person brave enough to comment there. Which is a pity, but that’s the problem with the trolls – they ruin the experience for everyone else by rendering rational discourse impossible.

Hi Doc,
I don’t consider that observation pedantic at all, I learned something. I genuinely thought “soccer” was a rare Americanism (Americanizm?) that Australians copied. You also said it in a way that wasn’t condescending or rude. See trolls? Civil corrections are possible!
And spot on regarding trolls. The irony is their stance on issues would likely be considered by people if they presented them without the personal attacks and vitriol. In a way, they’re self defeating.
Thanks for listening. I’ve been chuckling far too loudly at the recent Sleazecast at work right now.

Ruben, +10 for doing the ‘audio answer’ thing, which was quite enjoyable.
