  1. I love The End of the Tour. That was one of my favorite films of last year.

David Foster Wallace was still teaching at ISU when I was a student there. But I never had him for a class and never got to meet him. If I’d been more active in the English department I probably would have… but then again, maybe not since he was so reclusive!

The film does well depicting the setting. Wallace’s house and the surrounding countryside looks like it could have been shot right outside of Blm. As for the actual city itself, they show just fleeting glimpses so nothing jumped out at me as being out of place. I was glad they did it that way.

I can’t even imagine an audiobook of Infinite Jest (not that I’ve actually read it, just skimmed it a couple of times at Barnes & Noble). How do they handle all the footnotes on audio?

  2. Love your fascination with Gentle Giant Frank, I strongly recommend In A Glass House as one to check out if you haven’t already.

I had the delight to see them live twice. One time,on their first trip to the USA when opening for Jethro Tull. After their set, we all turned to each other and asked, “…And who were we here to see?”
Some of the best pure musicianship I’ve ever seen.

Every person in that band was a multi instrumentalist and terrific performers.

  3. I loved “The End of the Tour” so much. I’ve been listening to the audiobook of “Infinite Jest” off-and-on for about three years; can only take it in small increments and in special circumstances — like when I’m sitting outside drinking coffee on a weekend.

David Foster Wallace is fascinating in interviews because he truly does not give the impression that he is special or a genius or worthy of all this adulation — not even in a faux sense. Maybe, like Jesse Eisenberg says in the movie, he’s too narcissistic to realize he’s being a fake — but he really did seem like the real modest deal. Check this out — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwfQl2LGhwc. Another great Charlie Rose interview he did with two authors.
