Well sir, that was one funny episode, by George! (My dad, who was born in ‘ought-four, used to use both of those expressions.)
Do we ever, in any future episode, get to hear that darn interesting story about how (and why) Wilson O. McCuddle (sp?) quit his job because he liked oranges so much?
I’m a bit confused about Uncle Fletcher’s name. Is his last name Rush, as it sounds like it is? Does that indicate that young Rush Gook is named after the family name of some of Sade’s people?
To your list of strong characters Jack, Barney, Archie and Lucy, I would suggest adding Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, at least the version we got starting in 1943 (when they changed writers, for the better) up until Hal Peary’s ill-advised jump to CBS in 1950. (Boy, did he ever screw up!)

Nothing more on Wilson. By the way, you can look up stories/histories on at least 90% of the people mentioned on the show at my character website. (Wilson is here.)
“Fletcher Rush” is Uncle Fletcher’s name. I believe Sade was a Rush.
But young Rush is a different story altogether. Son of Mary Meadows (a good friend of Sade’s), Rush’s real name is Victor Rush Meadows. He was named after Vic, no kidding. He was adopted by Vic and Sade at age 8. Vic suggested to him, “I’ll call you “Rush” – you call me “Guv”. And so it was.
Gildy was a very strong character as was Leroy. There is no doubt. Fibber too.
RE: CBS – of course they all tried to go (and did) – but somehow, Peary waited just a tad too long – and KRAFT (a Mormon company) didn’t like CBS’ this and thats. Or so I hear.
Speaking of Gildy, do you know this Walter Tetley story?

That his mother had him fixed, you mean? Yes, I had read that before. Not too long ago I saw him in a Gene Autry movie from the thirties, when his voice still matched his body. It was a good match for Sherman in the Mr. Peabody segments of Rocky & Bullwinkle, too.
I’ll bookmark the character pages. That will be helpful. As for Fibber, I thought about mentioning him too, but didn’t want to expand your list too much.

Chief, expand away!
I saw Fibber recently here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idWqqlUl7dI
He’s perfect there – uh a lil too perfect. He’s like a robot McGee. Ab animated Fibber would have been better. I know, I know, he wasn’t “Fibber”. But what else could he be?
Fred Allen was larger than life and very witty. Groucho too, of course. But they were themselves and not characters.

Wow, Jim Jordan on Chico and the Man! Who’da thunk it?
I’m a big Fibber and Molly fan, and of course a big Gildy fan too, but not so much when he was on their show, nor for the first year or so of his own show. I always wondered what happened to the wife he apparently had on Fibber and Molly. Maybe he had to leave Wistful Vista because she disappeared under mysterious circumstances?!

I don’t take those other shows seriously!
I love Fibber. I like Goldy too – but I like the earlier episodes as opposed to the Jolly Boys days. I like the messes Leroy gets into and rather dislike Gildy getting into girl trouble… and eventually singing. Blah!!
Yeah Gildy was married and owned a girdle factory 🙂
I have a show on ONSUG that I have not done in a while. It is an OTR show where I play a favorite episode and talk about it. I might just do that in the next couple of days.

I would listen. Put a link on Twitter if you do it.
Unlike you, I love the Jolly Boys and Gildy’s various romances, especially the Leila Ransome one with Shirley Mitchell.
I was thinking earlier about how stiff and robotic Fibber was on that TV episode, and I was about to say that maybe he wasn’t used to moving his arms about because he was used to holding a script instead, but I had seen him in a couple of the movies they made in the forties, and don’t remember him being stiff in those. Maybe he got better direction then, or maybe he was just getting old and stiff by the time of Chico and the Man.
