German spy rings were operating in the US about this time, for the purpose of conducting espionage and sabotage in the event America entered the war. I bring this up because phrases such as “Number seven is a bicycle” are reminiscent of a secret code of some kind, as are the seemingly random names by which Vic addresses Rush. Is “Rhymer” an Anglicized form of the German name “Reimer”? Did a Nazi spy ring receive their “marching orders” through the episodes about the “marching team”? The repetition of the code names Y.Y. Flirch, H.K. Fleeber, J.J.J.J. Stunbolt, etc. may have been used to alert these agents that a message for them was to follow. What better way to transmit secret instructions than through a popular daily soap opera? Tuning in to it daily would arouse no suspicion, since many real Americans did the exact same thing!
