I only recently learned myself that the audible dial tones from the dial up modem could be controlled by sending the correct AT commands to the modem.
Obviously I had no idea at the time myself either, I just used a GUI dial-up tool provided by the ISP that didn’t offer any option to send additional commands. I guess they set it that way to make us know it was actually doing something. My preferred method was to smother the modem with pillows and blankets when I tried to sneak online late at night.
