Loved the review of Barry Lyndon, and agree that Ryan O’Neal (and most everyone else) was perfectly cast. I think what Kubrick was saying is that most real-life protagonists (i.e. you and I and whoever else might be reading this) are neither heroes nor antiheroes, and that the requirement to “grow” as the result of dramatic events is imposed by convention rather than reality. He was trying to be true to life, just as he was trying to be true to life by showing, for example, what it would have been like to play high-stakes card games by candlelight, what fake-ass makeup looks like after it has been worn for many hours, etc. The staging of scenes to resemble historic paintings is another example, because those painters were much more aware of what life was like in the period than any 1970s re-imagining could be. Great use of the wonderful music of the period, too. Compare that to the jarringly anachronistic “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” in the Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid movie, for example. Kubrick knew what he was doing.
