  1. Great way to commemorate such a tragic event, sir.

I was a freshman in high school at the time. I was not watching when it happened, but I was in my Algebra I class, standing next to the desk of my teacher, Mr. Hoffman, who was helping me with a problem, when the announcement came over the loudspeaker about the tragedy. I could not wait to get home that afternoon, that strange fascination mixed with utter grief, as I, a huge fan of the space program, needed to learn more about what happened. I spent that afternoon watching CNN, and recording it on the VCR, watching the horrific moment over and over again. It was also my mother’s birthday, and I thought about how sad it is that this event will always be in my mind whenever I wish her a happy day.

The very last Space Shuttle mission is going to happen this year, and I can’t express enough my sadness of that fact. The Space Shuttle was meant to be a stepping stone to our further progress into our destiny among the stars. Without it, where do we go from here? What will be the future of the International Space Station? How will we repair our satellites without a reusable vehicle? How do the children who dream of a career in space have any hope if there’s no way to facilitate their goals? I can only pray that somehow, someway, our space program can continue always onward and every upward.

    Thanks for this, Manny.

  2. Well said Brian…I agree 100%. I think it a huge mistake dismantling our space program with the “promise” that it will come back down the road! You know about those promises from the mouths of politicians………
