goodrob13 music show 3 – (2/10/11)

46:00 – The lost art of TV theme songs and commercial jingles, what do those songwriters, musicians, and vocalists do now?, a generation that finds it weird for products to be advertised with songs, the Toys “R” Us song (“I don’t wanna grow up, I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us kid”), the irony of enjoying commercial jingles while living an anti-commercial life, Mount Airy Lodge, judging theme songs and jingles out of context on their own merits, acknowledging the nostalgia factor, the Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes song (“The taste of Tony’s Frosted Flakes brings out the tiger in you”), the Tootsie Roll song (“Whatever it is I think I see becomes a Tootsie Roll to me”), gum commercials, hoping for a revival, and a small selection of my favorite intros and jingles (The Electric Company, Alice, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, One Day at a Time, Big Red, Charles in Charge, Dennis the Menace, Green Acres, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Juicy Fruit, The Munsters, Laverne and Shirley, The Addams Family, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Mr. Ed, Bod, We’re Not Candy, Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings, Jem, Tootsie Rolls, The Great Space Coaster, Josie and the Pussycats, and The Magic Garden).

  1. Rob, welcome to the underground with your solo project. Love the theme songs and commercial jingles and still break out into them when the moment calls for it. Hopefully the return of Hawaii Five 0 will remind Hollywood that theme songs are a good thing and they will start using them again.

  2. Holy crap, the them tune from “Simple Simom”! Haven’t heard mention of it snywhere since it ran on Irish TV around 1981! Was beginning to think it was a fake memory!

  3. Thanks Manny and Neal! Nickelodeon used to show Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings as part of its Pinwheel show. There were all sorts of obscure, random, artsy animations on there…some very trippy. I just remembered, Count Duckula was another British cartoon with a great theme song….and Danger Mouse. So many great theme songs!

  4. Really like the show, I think your right on the jingle and tv show tunes, they have faded. It is really interesting that as you talked about the commercials as I was driving, I would sing them, then at the end you played the actual commercial and I realized that I had sung the jingles correctly. Wild how those things just stick in your mind for decades, and how influenced we are as kids.

Thanks for the show and a trip down memory lane.
