Tape Land 26 – The Complete News From Civilization (11/20/85)

47:56 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Way back on September 5, 2000, on my Bluffcosm.com Internet radio site,  I released a 2-minute audio clip called “News From Civiliation”. It was from a tape labeled “FRANK DRUNK”, and I described it as “Frank is a freshman in college and has drank way too much vodka. In a drunken stupor, he reads from a Walt Disney World guidebook…”

Now, as part of the Tape Land project, I discovered that the tape is actually over 47 minutes long, with lots of interesting stuff going on. So let’s step back 32 years to that night of drunkenness… in The Complete News From Civilization!

Notes: In Brown Hall room 209, at Drew University, in Madison, NJ, Frank (or “Fen” as he is known then) is drunk, and his roommate John and fellow students Tom and Carson are recording him. He reads from a Walt Disney World guide and various comic books. They read from Dragon Magazine and talk about playing Traveller. Frank starts feeling sick. Later, Mad Mike walks in, and talks about the “vortex monster”. Then Frank goes outside and they follow him, including another student (“Russ”?). Frank eventually wanders into the woods, and they follow. They find him and try and convince him to come back to the dorm.

Tape Land 25 – W (XHE Extra High Energy 90) (circa 1980)

24:49 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

A tape just labeled “W”, from my childhood. This was the kind of tape that would be used over and over again, with various layers bleeding through. It starts with data saves from my home computer, which would have to be from 1981 at the earliest, but other parts of the tape seem to be older, possibly from the late 1970s.

Notes: (0:00) TI-99/4A data saved to audio cassette, (3:34) weird musical tones, (4:05) fan sound, (4:38) tongue clicking horse sound effects and whistling, (5:33) more TI-99/4A, (6:27) Frank’s time travel story, (15:10) TV (speed corrected), (16:02) classical music (edited), (18:47) TV, (18:55) Ronald McDonald has been fired, (19:28) songs (edited), (21:19) The Hobbit (edited).
