SERMONS #37 – Exodus Ends but the Exodus Doesn’t (2/6/23)

30:36 – The Promised Land is still a ways off when Moses types “30” or “THE END” at the bottom of last page of the Book of Exodus. Who knew?? No doubt a sequel is in the works. Why was there was so much repetition in the early books of the Bible? What language were the stone tablets written in? Were there 603,550 adult male Israelites or were there six hundred squad leaders commanding 3,550 fighting men? What do Ray Bradbury, Devo and Weird Al Yankovic have to do with anything we’re talking about? Tune in and Dave in Kentucky will tell you, or at least tell you what he thinks about it. Also: a preview of what comes next in the series (hint: it ain’t Leviticus) including some tasty classical accordion music. (Baroque, actually.)

Show art: The Erection of the Tabernacle and the Sacred Vessels by the illustrators of Figures de la Bible (1728) by Gerard Hoet (1648-1733), Public Domain.

Closing theme: Part of “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” from Act III of Solomon (1748) by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), Public Domain, performed by the Accordion Ensemble ARTE in 2017, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0.

PriorCaster – Chad Bowers (2/4/23)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is prior_caster_300.jpg

56:55PriorCaster, by Bob LeMent of Static Radio and Morning Commute, seeks to document the people who were the pioneers of audio on the internet.

Chad Bowers has taken the road less traveled on his lifelong journey to find interesting things to do and survive on.  He has sold cell phones and ended up creating a website, he’s directed anime films and found love, he’s worked in terrestrial radio and found the internet.  All these things have added up to a wild and interesting career of internet oddities.

Chad was working in terrestrial radio when he fell into the task of making a website for the station during the Geocities era of internet content.  This foray into creating something new and different made an impact on him.

Selling cell phones though was probably the most creative job he could have had at the time, even though saying it doesn’t seem right. It was through cell phone sales that he came up with his personal brand of internet strangeness, TITFOS, or The Incredible True Facts of Space.  This houses his worse fears and craziest desires and has outlasted many others to be a definite stop for the world-weary and tormented internet traveler.

1:40:09PriorCaster, by Bob LeMent of Static Radio and Morning Commute, seeks to document the people who were the pioneers of audio on the internet.

James O’Brien has worn many hats, but I think his best one is independent media producer.  He embodies the passion and drive that anyone who wants to produce their own media should look up to.

Starting with Rant Radio, most likely the first 24/7 independent streaming radio station back in January 1999, onto Rant TV which did the same for video in 2003. His projects and passions for internet media were fierce and incredibly independent.

As James has moved through his hobby of creating media, it has led to a kind of dream gig as an independent filmmaker, where he still explores the world for projects that fit his interests.

PQ Ribber has a long history of creative merry-making, from audio to art, books to bands, PQ has given a creative spin to whatever interests him.

Having roots on “real” (terrestrial) radio, PQ takes that knowledge and puts it to good use on The Overnightscape Central each week, as he shepherds the listener through various other voices as they expound on the topic du jour.

He even protects the earth from outer space wackiness on the Quake Reversal Satellite. While strumming a tune with one of his various bands.

Tape Land 166 – The Andy Kaufman Press Conference – Manny’s Video (11/9/08)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Tape_Land_Video_300.jpg

30:38 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

This episode is part of a sub-project within Tape Land called “Video Phase 2022”. I recently began transferring a ton of old video tapes to digital, and have been posting selections to YouTube. Here, I’ll be releasing the audio tracks of these videos, as well as linking you to the YouTube videos, and The Internet Archive.

The Andy Kaufman Press Conference – Manny’s Video (11/9/08)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HiwD5vLlEY

Frank Edward Nora had been doing his podcast, The Overnightscape, since 2003. In early 2008, he experimented with a video show called Inramble (subtitled “go on a quick video trip”) which seemed

On Sunday, November 9, 2008, I was the host of the “Andy Kaufman Press Conference” at a hotel in New Brunswick, NJ. The creator of the press conference was a man calling himself Steve Maddox from Indianapolis, IN. He’d been working for years on the Internet to perpetuate the idea that comedian Andy Kaufman faked his death in 1984 and was still alive.

A few months earlier, Steve found my podcast “The Rampler” on Twitter, and contacted me, pretending to be Andy Kaufman. While I was never the biggest Andy Kaufman fan, I found the idea of this guy impersonating him on the Internet to be interesting, so I played along.

He asked me to be the host of the press conference, which I thought would be fun. While several attendees were suspicious that I was in on the whole thing – I was as in the dark as everyone else.

Afterwards, we found out he had recruited his friends and family to put on the press conference. It was meant to add more content to the Internet about Andy Kaufman faking his death, rather than providing any actual information.

This video was filmed by Manny the Mailman. He uploaded it to “Yahoo! Video” – but it was lost when that service shut down. Curt Clendedin uploaded a copy of the video to Vimeo – which I thought was the only copy still available. However, I was about to find a copy of Manny’s original which I downloaded from Yahoo! Video in 2014 (which seems to be slightly better quality than Curt’s version).

You can hear much more of the event in audio on The Rampler #113 (11/9/08).
