Tape Land 14 – NYC 2002 – Times Sq. Arcades (Feb. 2002)

49:24 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

It was my first time back to the World Trade Center area since 9/11. I started off in lower Manhattan, and walked up along the Hudson River, to the World Financial Center, still being repaired. Later in the tape, I explore classic video game arcades in Times Square – visiting Laser Park and Broadway City Arcade – and talking about many other now long-lost landmarks of the area. Also on the tape are ambient sounds of commuting, notes on my Obliviana project (which would come to an end a year later), and much more… Recorded Feb 1-4, 2002.

Tape Land 13 – Fen Dreams Et Al. (Oct. 1989)

1:34:32 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Recorded on Tuesday, October 24, and Wednesday, October 25, 1989, on this tape I’m “wallowing in the late 80s” and describing my deeply weird, intricately detailed dreams. It’s right after my magazine, Anything But Monday, collapsed, and I’m living at home with my parents, unemployed. It starts off with me playing Tetris on my Mac Plus in the basement, talking about my life, and then getting into the dreams.

I really enjoyed hearing this cassette – it is being presented here for the first time ever – as I hadn’t even heard it since I recorded it over 27 years ago.

Tape Land 12 – Stormtoon Time (Nov. 2001)

1:13:44 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

On this tape from 2001, I talk a lot about an audio project called “Stormtoon“, which didn’t really go anywhere, but was an important step on my way to starting The Overnightscape 16 months later. Recorded on 11/13/01, 11/18/01 and 11/25/01, it also contains ambient sounds of commuting, World Trade Center, dreams, KISS, 209, driving in the rain, Earth Jerk audio movie idea, and more.

Tape Land 11 – Anything But Monday (11/17/86)

52:55 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Here’s an episode of my college radio show from over 30 years ago. As with most of these recordings, a few clips from this show have been played on Onsug, but the whole thing is being presented here for the first time since it aired.

It was an eventful time. We were in trouble with the school for what some viewed as objectionable content in the magazine we published based on the radio show. The week before I had just started dating my first girlfriend, and also went on my first “209 trip” with my friend Bryan. As well, I had just bought my Casio SK-1 sampling synthesizer, which I play around with incessantly on this episode.

Tape Land 10 – Baltimore (8/23/01)

20:00 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

In August 2001 I drove down to Baltimore to see a college friend. This short tape mostly documents the drive down, though there’s a little on the way back. Whenever I hear this tape, I think about how it was less than 3 weeks before 9/11… how I had no idea it was coming…

I did keep in touch with my friend from time to time after the visit, but sadly, she passed away in 2012.

Tape Land 9 – OLD (1969-1973)

55:51 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Here’s a very special tape from my childhood, which contains my earliest recordings. Labeled “OLD”, I dubbed the tape in the 1980’s to a new cassette to make sure it was preserved. This recording is taken from the dub.

Side 1 is from September 15-16, 1969, a few weeks before my 2nd birthday. This is my first recording, as far as I can tell. My parents interview me and give me a bath. I may have played parts of this on Onsug before, but this is the first time it’s being presented in its entirety.

Side 2 contains several sections. The first part is my father interviewing me, on 11/16/69 and then 2/22/70. In the 1970 section, I talk a lot about Sesame Street, which had premiered just 3 months earlier. I previously released this section as Cut and Shoot. The next part is from 11/24/73, when I’m 6. My brother, age 3, is also on the tape. I previously released this part as Tornado Warning. The final section, which may be from that same day, or at least within the next few weeks, has me recording and talking alone and also talking to my brothers. I released part of this section as Bad Hole, but much of this section was previously unreleased.
