Tape Land 144 – Polarized Worlds – Doctor Who fan film from 1985 (Summer 1985)

44:31 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

This episode is part of a sub-project within Tape Land called “Video Phase 2022”. I recently began transferring a ton of old video tapes to digital, and have been posting selections to YouTube. Here, I’ll be releasing the audio tracks of these videos, as well as linking you to the YouTube videos.

Polarized Worlds – Doctor Who fan film from 1985

www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAUJ9m7BbjY

“Polarized Worlds” is a Doctor Who fan film made by a group of teens in Bridgewater Township, NJ, in the summer of 1985. Thought lost, director Frank Edward Nora found a Beta dub of the original VHS, over 36 years later in December 2021.

The audio of the raw videos shot for Polarized Worlds have long been available on The Onsug in a series called Video Kids 85. But this is the first time the final movie has been released. The beginning of the video didn’t transfer – it included a title card reading “Glynnora Productions”, an introduction by writer/producer Jim Glynn, and scenes of the first six Doctors from the BBC series, establishing Paul Bergen as the Seventh Doctor. I’ll restore the beginning at some point, if at all possible. I’m also planning to release more of the “behind the scenes” footage.

Tape Land 143 – Beublin A. Richardson – Season 1 (1991)

1:21:16 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

This episode begins a sub-project within Tape Land called “Video Phase 2022”. I recently began transferring a ton of old video tapes to digital, and have been posting selections to YouTube. Here, I’ll be releasing the audio tracks of these videos, as well as linking you to the YouTube videos.

Beublin A. Richardson – Season 1 (1991)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQjeqZPmMq8

Original video series about an eccentric entertainment producer named Beublin. A. Richardson who becomes obsessed with a stone egg. Filmed in Somerset County, NJ, in 1991. Written and directed by Frank Edward Nora. More info at onsug.com

Beublin A. Richardson has had a complex existence in The Onsug. I continued the series in audio during the Bluffcosm era (2000-2002). In 2005, I played the audio version of all the episodes on weekends when The Overnightscape was a daily show, in a feature called Weekend Showcase. The response to this was very negative from my listeners, which led, down the road, to my creating The Overnightscape Underground as a place for alternative audio that wouldn’t “interfere” with the main show. This then led to The Onsug of today.

The edit used in the video has never been released before. It separates the content into 13 episodes, with some silence in-between. It also has a brief audio clip of me as a baby over the title screen. There is also an end credits sequence.

It’s been a long time since there’s been any new Beublin material, but Peter and I talk about it whenever we get together, so who knows, Beublin may continue someday.

Tape Land 142 – The Anything But Monday Program – Radio Nomads (3/16/94)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tapeland5_300.jpg

19:09 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

“Mad” Mike and Frank Nora “Master of the Airwaves reunite for an ill-fated attempt to revive their college radio show, Anything But Monday.

Notes: The return of Anything But Monday, start the show off with a bang, Roger Rabbit laserdisc, hamster power, ducks are mammals, Classic ABM – Santa Claus and Jack the Ripper, Sony MiniDisc, Realistic mixing board, On Today’s Program, Whitewater, Bill Clinton, water-based scandals, the ancient gods, a fun dictator, edicts, Tonya Harding and Japanese wrestling, first segment over, Segment 2, big star, Frank’s wearing a soiled Beavis & Butthead T-shirt, brainwashing, mental powers, Random Personalities – Bruce Springsteen and Barney Rubble, Dead Body of the Day – John Candy, Donkey Kong, The United States of America, Ross Perot, imaginary numbers, Quick Queries, we’ve reached the end.

Behind the scenes: This was our first ABM recording since 1990 (though we did record a writing session in 1993). We recorded after hours at a chiropractic office Mike was working at in the Clifton, NJ area. I was living at my apartment in Iselin, NJ, and I drove up with a bunch of equipment to record the show. The show didn’t go well. We were very rusty and unprepared, and we didn’t record very much. On the drive home, I was pulled over by the police, and they saw the equipment in the back of my Jeep. They said they had received reports of thefts in the area and accused me of stealing the equipment. Somehow they let me go, and when I got home I called Mike to let him know what happened, but I must have woken him up, so we wound up having a fight. This soured things, and we didn’t try and revive the show again till 1997. (I never heard back from the police.)

Tape Land 141 – Day of Attempts (9/2/10)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tapeland5_300.jpg

1:05:07 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

Thursday, September 2, 2010, a day where I tried to record a lot of stuff but nothing seemed to work. Starting at 9:36 AM walking to work from the Port Authority Bus Terminal over to Third Avenue, I started Frank Nora Show 1560, but I decided to dump the recording because I wasn’t feeling it. At lunchtime (or after work), I recorded a Moodbruck segment – my series of personal audio notes on my projects. After work, on the walk back to the bus station, I tried again to record Frank Nora Show 1560, but again I wasn’t feeling it. Later at home, I try and record a new experimental show called Cybernightcast, but this, as well, doesn’t feel right. At 10:30 PM I end the day of failed recordings.

I saved all these recording to a hard drive, and discovered them in December 2021. Listening to the whole day of failed recordings is quite interesting. Note that I did finally get it right the next day with Frank Nora Show 1560 – Oppressive Weather (9/3/10) – where I covered a lot of the same topics. And two days later I used the same sequence of audio from Cybernightcast on Macho Condor #1 (9/4/10) 1:19:54 [221].

Notes: === FRANK NORA SHOW 1560, ATTEMPT 1 === 9:36 AM, Cinnabon fixed their gate, most tracks in one month, heatwave, Bushmills on the rocks, Irish politics, Hurricane Earl, Labor Day weekend, terrorist takes over the Discovery Channel, manifestos, Sanrio store, sets of characters, B. Hills Kid, conspiracy theories, meaningless stores, the key to the city, guest authors. === MOODBRUCK === Dumped this morning’s recording, weirdly hot and oppressive, new audio ideas, The Rampler Commons Show, The Night Packages, The Late Night Music Show, “subspace”, lost my train of thought, Republic of Avalon Radio.=== FRANK NORA SHOW 1560, ATTEMPT 2 === Frank Nora Show 1560, 5:30 PM, oppressive sunlight, air quality alert, Nintendo Store, Hurricane Earl, Apple live stream, not feeling it. === CYBERNIGHTCAST 1 ATTEMPT === The Smoking Sound by Juanitos [Jamendo, CC BY-SA 3.0], 1995 by Paper Tiger [Jamendo, CC BY-NC-SA 3.0], You Can Not Knock Me Down by Jim Guittard [Jamendo, CC BY-NC-SA 3.0], Celestial Mechanix by Damaged Gods [Jamendo, CC BY-NC-ND 3.0], Strange Music 1 by misha64u [Jamendo, CC BY-SA 3.0], KFC Training – Cleaning the Lobby and Kitchen [collection], audio problems, another concept show, what is Cybernightcast, Buffalo Trace bourbon, what if I did an Internet radio show in the 90s, OsoaWeek from 1994, Hemisinister Review, movie reviews, not feeling it, reflecting on the day of failed recordings, the trash heap, 10:30 PM.
