Gunkcast 53: We Gave This Our 21% (A Podcast Meetup!) (November 2018)

1:21:18 – In the history of Gunkcast, one thing we are particularly fond of is when a podcast meetup episode comes together. And here you have just that… a BIG meeting of the podcast minds for 2018! Join Smidge and his very special guest Bob LeMent (of Static Radio fame) as they meet for lunch in Chicagoland. Tune in for some fascinating discussion on the subject of all things pop culture! Some of the topics here include travel horror stories, being confused by all the technology improvements (& screw-ups!), why being an Uber/Lyft driver may not be your dream job, our Hollywood doppelgängers, past run-ins with Wil Wheaton & the Goo Goo Dolls, visiting Jim Morrison’s grave, Miles & Manny, having life-theatening podcast jobs, the college prankster years revisited, & following Bob’s most important rule in life… “just try to stay out of jail!” If you listen to just one meetup episode this year, this is one not to be missed! Cheers!

A special note that the soundtrack to this episode is provided by a Tribute band Smidge is currently part (a hint to a blond-haired trio from the 80’s) called Invisible Sun. Look for them on the live scene very soon!!

Gunkcast 52: Byron Of The Dead (A Frightfest Double Feature!) (Halloween 2011-2018)

54:16 – We wanted to drop a most frightful last minute surprise with this one! A certain past Gunkcast show host is resurrected for All-Hallows’ Eve of 2018 as we combine our 1st two archival Halloween episodes for a very special Frightfest Double Feature! Originally released as “A Nightmare On Byron’s Street” (2011) and “Byron From The Grave” (2012), these two shows have never been broadcast previously on Onsug. So combine a double-whammy of terrifying classic episodes, add some new commentary from Smidge, & throw in a current pop culture review section to boot (trust us, it’s to die for)… what more can you possible want from a podcast? This one should definitley leave you screaming for more! Cheers!

Gunkcast 51: Welcome To The Meltdown (September 2017 – June 2018)

1:02:58 – People have said they spotted something approaching… can it be true? Can a certain podcast be descending back to Earth from the deepest regions of space? Yes, here it is folks… the return of Gunkcast for 2018! After a very extended hiatus we are back with the long-promised episode, which features an even more long-promised album that has finally been released. Yes, we have decided to treat you (our dedicated fans) to an in-depth dissection of each of the songs from this new album & we are dedicating this episode to the 1st track: “Welcome To The Meltdown.”

And as if this couldn’t get any better, we also have jam packed this episode with all sorts of bonus content! We do our signature Gunkcast review of several pop culture movies, as well as a certain exclusive You Tube Red series (& take special note to stick around for a possible hidden ending featuring a certain very long overdue review)! Finally, we have recently unearthed some forgotten recordings which were done several years ago for an intended collaboration with Jimbo… we offer these in special tribute to his memory here. All of this plus our trademark crazy comedy and rocking soundtrack (provided by Smidge & the band)… what more could you possibly want from a podcast? Cheers!

Gunkcast Thanksgiving Special (Flashback): Punk Talk 2010!

40:49 – So this was a total last minute brainstorm idea for the Thanksgiving season of 2017… why not flashback to one of our oldest shows (which just so happened to be our 1st meetup as well)!? See originally this episode was numbered “002,” but was technically sort of our 3rd release for the podcast, & was also commonly referred to as the pre-show for the episode #2 proper (wait, huh??)? Ok, yeah… whatever (this probably all made sense to Byron Duddle who was running the show back then)! Besides all of this, we very strongly feel this stands as a great episode for the podcast and are proud to introduce it to Onsug for the 1st time ever! Enjoy!!

Original show notes: With the looming Gunkcast# 2 getting very near…Byron decided to release this as the pre-show (we’ll just call it the Thanksgiving Special)! A couple of surprise guests made it to the studio for an all-out punk rock discussion and to share their own stories of how punk affected their lives. This included some startling revelations as to certain people’s true family origins, and also a very timely Thanksgiving tale starring a punk icon of the past! Cheers!

As always…please share the love and listen to some of our favorite podcasts at—-Static Radio, Onsug, Special Delivery, & Insignificast!

Gunkcast 50: Gunkcast Does The Hustle (Part 2) (October 2017)

1:30:01 – Well this is it folks… the BIG 50th episode for the podcast! And what better way to celebrate it than to make it an all-out music extravaganza?! Yes, this is the 2nd part of our discussion with Jon Lamoreaux from The Hustle podcast. In this one we hear many more fascinating stories about the musicians he has interviewed (again ranging from fairly big celebrities to those who flew slightly under the radar of commercial success).

Some quick notes on all the cool stories & discussion topics covered here: What happens when you accidentally walk in on your rock & roll idols changing backstage? Bands who hold a 25-year long grudge for their backstage chocolates being eaten! Half our concert-going country are obese! Your favorite studio musicians may just suck live! Adam Ant has gone Metal! Famous reunion tours which may have been instigated for not so noble reasons. Jon just needs to tap into the Australian music scene!

Also we continue on with our request list of who we feel Jon needs to get on his show, as well as compare our concert-going intake for this year with him. Plus you won’t want to miss Smidge’s real life hair-raising tale which comes just in time for Halloween of 2017!  Yes, these are some of the many reasons to tune in to this episode! And as if this couldn’t get better, just stick around for a possible hidden ending featuring a backstage concert adventure for Smidge and his friends. What more could you want from a podcast? Cheers!

Also (as always), please share the love and listen to some of our favorite podcasts at: The Hustle, Onsug, Static Radio, Insignificast, The Not New Review, and Rock Solid!

Gunkcast 49: Gunkcast Does The Hustle (Part 1) (August-October 2017)

1:00:40 – So 2017 seems to be the year of podcast meetups for Gunkcast! After a bit of a hiatus (we’ll just call it an extended summer break), we are back with another BIG show! This time we have a special guest co-host in the studio to talk with us on the subject of all things music! His name is Jon Lamoreaux and he does a very cool podcast called The Hustle for which he seeks out musicians & bands who once had their moment of fame (a big note to those one-hit wonders of the mid-70’s through early 90’s). Many of the artists he has had on his show are pretty big names who you definitely will know, as well as some who have flown slightly under the commercial radar of success. So we had a very interesting discussion with Jon on how he approaches his show and he shares many fascinating stories regarding the artists he has interviewed. We also discuss many of the bands & artists we have a common passion for (& we may just offer up some suggestions for Jon for who we think he needs to get on his show)!

Although we were admittedly very tempted to include bits of all the great music we talked about in this episode, we have decided to honor copyrights & do the Onsug-friendly version here. So here are just a few links regarding some of the bands/artists we discuss in this Part #1 episode: The Chameleons (https://youtu.be/nGssYCWIV74 & https://youtu.be/4sL-wu5oa1w), Russ Ballard (https://youtu.be/FNrbrhQknLQ), The Mighty Lemon Drops (https://youtu.be/E5mltgsGEas), The A’s (https://youtu.be/rdIkDWNWVlA), Real Life (https://youtu.be/jCHE0Tjw6MA), The Flowerpot Men (https://youtu.be/7kj5K3BxA6s), Robert Tepper (https://youtu.be/MwPb7g_BlXQ), Tim Capello (https://youtu.be/PdaaGlyu7EQ), Steven Wilson (https://youtu.be/ENfI942SJTY), Guided By Voices (https://youtu.be/-fm83rY2aWc), & Longwave (https://youtu.be/CLEZ8tyfA9A). These are besides the many more popular artists we also discussed. So enjoy the 1st part of quite the fascinating music discussion we had… we will be back with the 2nd part very soon!

Also to note, we may be debuting a track off the upcoming (and long promised) e.p. from the band! So you may want to stick around for that here too! Cheers!

Gunkcast 48: In The Fish 3 (Part 2) (May 2017)

1:04:04 – At last we are back with the conclusion of our BIG podcast meetup which recently took place on the streets of Chicago. Smidge is joined by Manny The Mailman (of Special Delivery) and Miles Tidal (of Static Radio) as they take refuge from some harsh Spring Windy City weather… but may just find themselves in an establishment which is located in one of the most historically dangerous parts of Chi-Town! Yes… the good times and exciting conversation continues with topics which range from stories of late night celebrity run-ins, to crazy podcast-related adventures, to just what the heck this episode title actually means! Laced with plenty of nostalgia & pop culture talk… this show is one not to be missed! So why don’t you just dive right in and enjoy Part #2 of this meeting of the (podcast) minds! Cheers!

Gunkcast: Gunk At 45 (March 2017)

1:08:18 – Has 2017 seemed just a little quiet so far for the podcast? Fear not… you may just need earplugs for this one! We crank those guitar amps up (yeah, yeah…definitely past “11”) & bring the show back in full swing as we dedicate this episode to the band behind the podcast! Yes, for this one we pay tribute to the legacy of The Gunk U.K.. Hear from friends, podcast peers, ex-roadies, punk rock mail carriers, pub owners, disgruntled recording engineers, and (of course) the band themselves as we take you on a wild journey into the world of The Gunk U.K.! The full story is disclosed about the band who dared to shun the establishment and take what was rightfully theirs: a good pint of ale at the pub for their sweaty performance! There is also the hint that for the proper listening expeience, you should play this episode at 45 RPM (& at that max volume)! And to top everything off…we take you on a seasonal adventure, give you a stellar concert review, and throw in all the great music to boot! What more could you possibly want from a podcast? Cheers!

A special note should be made that you may hear a companion episode to this one on Static Radio right here. Also, please share the love and listen to some of our favorite podcasts at: Onsug, Static Radio, & Insignificast!
