  1. Some listeners might be surprised that the Gooks call the noon meal dinner rather than lunch. I’m about ten years older than you and when I was growing up the three meals were always called breakfast, dinner and supper, but when I moved away I found others calling them breakfast, lunch and dinner. The only noon meals still called dinner were on Sundays and holidays.

    I too grew up with the three meals being known as breakfast, dinner, and supper. Supper was usually a smaller meal, leftovers from dinner. Breakfast was a large meal served at about 6:30. Dinner was served at around 11:30 and supper around 5:30. Normal breakfast would be biscuits, eggs, bacon, or sausage, lots of butter and syrup and grits and coffee or hot chocolate. We would pour our too hot to drink chocolate into the saucer to let it cool and then drink from that. I may be younger, but I am not sure.

  3. That breakfast sounds good. Ours was about the same, minus the grits, plus gravy, and usually with sorghum molasses instead of syrup, though Karo or Bob White would do in a pinch. I’m guessing you grew up further south than I did, hence the grits.

  4. In elementary school, Mr Brooks was the teacher stuck supervising the lunch room proceedings. He would refer to the trays used at lunch time as ‘Dinner Trays’.

  5. Maybe I am confused but in DFW area, dinner and supper were interchangeable and meant the evening meal (at 5 pm). Lunch was lunch 🙂

    My breakfast: eggs, toast, bacon, OJ
    Basic lunch: tuna Fish sandwich/Bologna sandwich, chips, pickle, kool aid
