Thanks for the commercials! We always had Lava soap at tobacco-stripping time, because that “volcanic pumice” was about all that would scrub the tobacco gum off our hands without taking the skin with it.
Also, my mom always referred to our couch as a “davenport” a la Sade. I guess they thought it sounded classier. Pretty sure it wasn’t the Davenport brand.

Well, as I recall, I tried to say “davenport” in the podcast and the word wouldn’t come to me. It was a “couch” where I lived. 🙂
Did your parents listen to Vic and Sade?

I found the pronunciation of facade a little strange, Vic says “fa-kaid”

Not to my knowledge, but my mom told me that my dad and her dad and all their workhands would be sure to come in from the fields to listen to Lum & Abner. Being more Southern than Midwestern, and more rural than citified, my people would have identified more with that show.

You’d almost think someone in the lodge had a vendetta against Sade. They seem to humiliate her at every opportunity.

and Votto’s shot hits the upper-right fa-kaid!
Still love what Vic says abut the Bijou, especially when edited together. It really is poetic.
Shambles: too bad there isn’t a thimble club harassing Vic in the same fashion.
Comment by Jimbo — November 18, 2017 @ 9:03 am
Well, he has to sit outside with Uncle Fletcher and Russell in the cold one time while they’re waiting for the Thimble Club to finish up.. but that inconvenience probably isn’t in quite the same league.

Dave from Wisconsin, Art van Harvey also pronounces “gibberish” with a hard “g” in this episode. I believe I read that Paul Rhymer sometimes took until almost showtime to complete the scripts, so maybe they were reading it cold.

And Art VH also says “lie BARRY” but is that him or Vic?
Comment by Jimbo — November 18, 2017 @ 11:18 am
Lava soap is good stuff. Gets spray paint off my hands quick.

If he does it consistently, over numerous occasions, we can probably conclude that Paul Rhymer was at least okay with that being Vic’s pronunciation of the word, or else PR would have corrected AVH. It does seem like a Midwestern common-man’s way of pronouncing it.

Chad we used to use Lava all the time. Mmmm pumice.
Yeah I know people who say lie barry too.
Comment by Jimbo — November 18, 2017 @ 12:25 pm
I used to say “lie barry” on purpose to make my daughter yell “That’s not how you say it!”

You are evil, Shambles.
