Tape Land 44 – Little Frankie Nora – How Do You Feel About the Job? (1987)

47:43 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

In 1987, at age 19, I set up a rudimentary recording studio in my parents’ basement. I created six “albums” of music as “Little Frankie Nora”: Die!, The Good War, Demolition Curve, Original Tin, How Do You Feel About the Job?, and Ending the Era with Calm Music (released in Tape Land 23). I compiled the best of these to create two official cassette releases: Welcome to the Weasel Village Mall and Bicentennial Cane, which had very limited distribution. These two have been released on the Onsug Archive. However, the individual “albums” have never been released.

This is the 5th album, “How Do You Feel About the Job?” As I mention in the track “Box Spring”, this album was begun on May 22, 1987, after a hiatus of 3-4 months from recording. The main instruments I used were a Casio SK-1 sampling keyboard and a small black-and-white TV. I think I also had a bass guitar pedal I borrowed from my friend Chris.

Another interesting note, in the track “Frank’s Dream”, is a fragment of recording from November 24, 1979, when I was 12. I dreamed I was on a silver boat in 2043.

One of my favorite Little Frankie Nora songs is on this album – “Going Off” – which I’ve played a number of times of the Other Side of The Overnightscape.

Track list: Welcome Back, Reemiks, Recur, False Chest, Thaldarndog, Cream Opus, Hoehme, Box Spring, I, Ron, Detroit, Spencer, Recommended, Sands of Mercy, Master of Fools, The First Ones, The Last Ones, Their Hands, Try Fencing, White People, Frank’s Dream, Doktor Bojangles, Previrginia, Virginia, Way of Life, Game #2, Fuck You, Mommy Furriest, Skill, Easy, Palsy Walsy, Going Off, Vampires, Young, Old, Bird, Turtle, Gate, Pillar, Sand, Rock, Come Again.

Tape Land 43 – Anything But Monday (10/27/86)

1:04:46 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I will be presenting the audio of a cassette tape from my collection. It’s a way to help motivate me to digitize more of my archives.

Here’s another episode on my college radio show “Anything But Monday”, with co-host Mad Mike.

This one is very special – as long as I can remember, there was something wrong with this particular tape, and it couldn’t be played. Today, February 3, 2018, I broke open the cassette and transferred the tape to a new cassette housing – and I was able to hear it, perhaps for the first time since it was recorded over 30 years ago.

Notes: Starting the show, the rip in time, the cart machine’s busted, The Mailman’s Nightmare, the station want to go to 100 watts, Kaboom PSA, virgins, Drew Security PSA, Halloween costume contest, Anything But Monday Magazine #3, Public Transit PSA, The Mets, Tolley Pit bathroom, dying fly, Israel Kat & Matzoh Mouse vs. Shalom Gnome, supermarkets, the new secret mystery, Progressive Music, Blind Welder PSA, We Are The World backwards, anti-apartheid demonstrators, gross-out question, random phone calls, (some tape speed problems at this point), TV game shows, The Gong Show, Match Game, Wheel of Fortune, House Bat Management PSA, cable radio, freedom of speech, France, bag ladies, beggars, quadmates, putting the clock back on the wall, Gilligan’s Island, Stephen Wright, Jonathan Round “In Quest of the Unicorn”, end of the show.
