The Night Pool #1 (1/20/14)

3:59:26 – Take a deep dive into The Overnightscape Underground (Onsug) Archive…

Onsug is a massive collection of audio – currently over 6,200 tracks, totaling over 251 days (over 8 months) of audio. But what’s in the archive? What does it sound like?

I chopped each audio track into 5-minute clips, resulting in over 75,000 of these segments. By playing them in random order, we can deeply explore what’s inside the archive, to get an idea of what it contains.

This is the third, and hopefully final, name for this project. I started off a few weeks ago calling it “Onsug Explorer”, and then about a week later I changed the name to “Ramplers”. Both these names implied a kind of guide or reference tool for the world of the “ramplers” (hosts) of The Overnightscape Underground. I tried various tests where I hosted and commented on the clips – but it didn’t feel right and was a huge amount of work. And while eventually I would like to embark on such a project, I don’t have the resources to do it right now. But I do love listening to these random clips – so I deciced to use a name that’s been bouncing around Onsug since at least 2010 – “The Night Pool”.

The Night Pool is just like drifting though all these random thoughts and ideas, soundscapes and songs, conversations and rants… no hosting, no context… just a pleasant swim though the humble weirdness of Onsug…

Ramplers #1 (1/9/15)

3:59:56 – Take a deep dive into The Overnightscape Underground (Onsug) Archive…

Onsug is a massive collection of audio – currently over 6,200 tracks, totaling over 251 days (over 8 months) of audio. But what’s in the archive? What does it sound like?

I chopped each audio track into 5-minutes segments, with the last segment of each being what’s left, and so less than 5 minutes. Once completed, I had over 75,000 of these segments. By playing them in random order, we can deeply explore what’s inside the archive, to get an idea of what it contains.

Earlier this week I released the first mix of these clips, called Onsug Explorer. Since then, I’ve listened to 10+ hours of these random segments, and I’ve really been enjoying it – I just want to hear more and more. Something new and unexpected every 5 minutes… very compelling…

I decided to rename this project “Ramplers”… and start compiling the clips into 4-hour blocks. This one in particular really blew me away – that’s why I chose it to be Ramplers #1.

Let me know what you think…
