Tape Land 153 – Boring Conversations on a Train (July 2002)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tapeland5_300.jpg

1:36:40 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

The title says it all – the majority of this tape consists of extremely boring conversations on a train. The tape is labeled “6/22/02-7/27/02 – Good Stuff!!! NYC etc.”, though it seems to start on July 10. I don’t clearly remember now 20 years later, but I think I was trying to capture the sound of a train ride (in this case, from Delawanna to Hoboken in NJ) – with the train sounds, announcements, overheard conversations, etc. It’s an interesting historical audio reference, if nothing else. There’s also a very weird guy on the subway, and me talking about my Obliviana project (which I would finally let go of the following March, when I started The Overnightscape) in my Jeep during a thunderstorm.

Notes: Unknown music, boring conversations on a train, Wed. July 10, 2002, 9:46 AM, subway, weird guy, busker, guys talking about something, papers, lots of people, on a bus?, more boring conversations on a train, PATH station?, thunderstorm, Fri. July 19, 2002, 5:44 PM, went to the MacWorld Show, sitting in my Jeep at the Delawanna Station, my progress in Obliviana, Dashic Deeds, the 8 subdivisions, motor sound, inside?

2:16:16 – Welcome to Tape Land! On each episode, I’ll present the audio of a cassette tape or historic material from my personal archives.

This episode is part of a sub-project within Tape Land called “Video Phase 2022”. I recently began transferring a ton of old video tapes to digital, and have been posting selections to YouTube. Here, I’ll be releasing the audio tracks of these videos, as well as linking you to the YouTube videos, and The Internet Archive.

He decides to make up one of his own, “The Evil Farm”, and film a movie about it with a group of local teens. In basements, bowling alleys, shopping centers, fast food restaurants, movie theaters, supermarkets, parking lots, and beyond, the mystery unfolds… and takes a tragic turn…

The Compleat Evil Farm is an expanded version of the original, including all the footage that was shot, for a much deeper dive into the world of 1987.

SERMONS #12 – Swindles, Superstitions & Spells (2/9/22)

29:37 – The love triangle of Jacob, Rachel and Leah can be summed up in the words of the Lovin’ Spoonful: “Sometimes you really dig a girl the moment you kiss her, but then you get distracted by her older sister.” Except in this case, it’s the girls’ father who masterminds the distraction. A battle of wits ensues in which two con men attempt to out-con each other, and two sisters vie for the same man’s affection, by methods both normal and paranormal. It’s a Biblical confection with a musical surprise in the middle. Sit a spell, listen a spell, maybe even fall under a spell. Dave in Kentucky does the casting.
