The Closet Excavationist #8 – Monkey Business (8/1/19)

56:43 – Do the dead listen to The Overnightscape?  Why else would Frank Edward Nora be mentioned in a reading by Dave and Lisa’s psychic medium?  Was Dave in Kentucky’s apron-string theory confirmed or denied? Did Dave’s grandpa object in principle to rural electrification, farm planning, crop allotments and the like, or was he simply an inveterate procrastinator? Find out the answer to some of these questions (perhaps) on this episode of The Closet Excavationist.

Into the Time Warp #8 – July Heat (7/26/19)

1:22:11 – Dave in Kentucky proudly presents two high-quality episodes of Broadway is My Beat from July, 1951.  Larry Thor stars as Lieutenant Danny Clover, a New York plainclothes detective with both a flair for the poetic and an impatient desire to cut to the chase.  The heat is on in more ways than one in this gritty police procedural.  Feel the heat!

Show art:  Larry Thor (CBS Radio publicity photo, circa 1951).

The Closet Excavationist #7 – Apron Strings (7/20/19)

33:18 – Lisa was unavailable, so Laverne (see show art) co-hosts with Dave in Kentucky as he examines a couple of academic papers from a half-century or so ago. Parental over-protection, separation anxiety and school phobias are discussed in both psychological and personal terms. Dave reminisces, Laverne comments.

1:15:57 – Another week, another old trunk for Dave and Lisa to go through, in search of the elusive belt or “something else” that goes around one’s waist. This latest “treasure chest” had belonged to Dave’s older sister before she passed away a few years ago.

The Closet Excavationist #4 – Procrastination (6/28/19)

1:03:00 – Dave in Kentucky talks about the books and movies that have been occupying all his time and preventing him from cleaning out his closet.  (Well, he’ll blame it on that, anyway.)  Dave reviews both of Harper Lee’s novels (To Kill a Mockingbird and its sequel, Go Set a Watchman) as well as the movie with Gregory Peck, George Orwell’s 1984 (both the book and the movie), plus Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra.

Themes Like Old Times #7 – Open Mic Night (6/5/19)

30:01 – In which Old Time Radio actor/announcers Larry Thor and Ernest Chappell do their respective things at the corner bar where Dave in Kentucky is the emcee. Dave performs their theme songs (Rodgers and Hart’s “Manhattan” from Thor’s “Broadway’s My Beat” and the slow movement from Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D-minor from Chappell’s “Quiet, Please”) and vocalizes his own song parody “I’ll Take Kentucky”. Thrill to the high-flying beat poetry of Larry Thor, and discover the “energy drink” that inspires it! Marvel at the encyclopedic knowledge of Ernest Chappell, the Man Who Knows Everything! Salivate at the evocative descriptions of Del Monte Foods and Campbell’s Soups! Please don’t reveal the Shock Ending: Proof that open-mic audiences are truly a Crowd Without Pity!
